Twin Peaks Publicity – 1992 United Kingdom Press Kit for Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me

In a town like Twin Peaks, no one is innocent

David Lynch’s Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me was released in the United Kingdom on November 20, 1992. As part of publicity for the film, a fantastic Red Room-themed press kit was produced. The kit contained a film synopsis, a chart tracking all the relationships in the film and several black and white publicity photos taken by the late on-set photographer Lorey Sebastian.

The cover of the press kit folder contains a stunning image of red drapes from the Red Room with the film’s tag line – “In a town like Twin Peaks, no one is innocent.”

Relationship chart for "Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me."

The back of this folder contains a colorful relationship chart that tracks how the many characters in the wonderful and strange town (and beyond) are connected to Laura Palmer. Labeled, “Connections,” the chart lists the following relationships: Related, Married, Romantic, Friendship, FBI, Drugs and Acquaintances. The latter are indicated by a broken line.

The chart is missing some connections like a “romantic” line between Mike Nelson and Donna Hayward and a “drugs” between Bobby Briggs, Laura Palmer and Cliff Howard. I imagine, however, the latter was omitted since it would have been a spoiler. Other characters from the Missing Pieces are not included such as Dr. Jacoby or Ed Hurley. In 1992, these deleted scenes were only a dream.

Other characters from Deer Meadow such as Jack, Irene and the Old Guy at Hap’s or the “Hot Water, Carl” lady from the Fat Trout Trailer Park were also not included.

The images used are a combination of publicity photos from the film, such as the Man From Another Place which is pulled from this publicity photo. Some images are taken from the Twin Peaks Pilot and original ABC Television publicity photos while others are from Lynch’s 1992 motion picture.

The images of Shelly Johnson, Jacques Renault and Annie Blackburn appear to be something not from the show. It also looks like Harold Smith’s eyes are closed in his headshot.

The glossy folder opens to reveal images of Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee) from the Red Diamond City Motel scene; Special Agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) from the Red Room; and Killer BOB (Frank Silva) which is ghosted over the red drapes.

The far left panel contains a synopsis of the film which uses parts of the “Not For Publication” synopsis from Spelling Films International (see this article).

A David Lynch Film
Twin Peaks
Fire Walk With Me

These are the last seven days of Laura Palmer.

We are concerned with the seven days leading up to the brutal murder of Laura Palmer, but first we must step back one year.

We see the body of Teresa Banks drifting along Wind River, Washington. Agent Desmond is summoned to the office of FBI Chief Gordon Co, in the neighbouring state of Oregon to confer on the case. Immediately, clues begin to present themselves in many, startling forms: from the peculiar behaviour of Cole’s cousin Lil and, at the trailer park where Teresa had lived, a discovery so charged with meaning that it becomes clear her death was caused by powerful force that has wended its way through the entire community she lived.

A force entwined in the rely fabric of time, sinter and consciousness.

Special agent Dale Cooper is called in. His keen intuitive powers will be needed on this case, with its perplexing riddles that stretch far beyond the merely tragic.

Forward then, one year, to find Laura Palmer taught up in this same tide of evil, edging ever closer to release from the demons who’ve left their mark on her; physical and emotional extremes from which she will never recover.

And clues, always clues.

There is a “visitation”. Agent Jeffries, presumed dead after vanishing several years earlier. Stricken by this dark power, he is unable to help, only to warm.

There is a gift that reveals to Laura the true source of her torment.

And as her nightmare becomes ever more real there is “The Power & The Glory,” an imfamous nightclub on the US/Canadian border. With her drug use and promiscuity accelerating, it’s here that the ugly truth is revealed and here that the betrays her best friend, Donna.

Laura knows the party, over. There’s only one escape from the evil that invaded her heart  and she takes it.

As our story dose, it becomes clear that the voracious, dark force has not yet finished with the town of “Twin Peaks” – and that Laura will continue to struggle against it from another place.

The far right panel contains actor credits with Sheryl Lee and Ray Wise receiving top billing. The remainder of key cast members are listed in alphabetical order. One interesting note is Lil the Dancer who is listed being played by Kimberly Ann Cole. This is different from the Spelling Films International press release which used the actress’ real name – Kim Bendheim.

1992 UNITED KINGDOM PRESS KIT FOR TWIN PEAKS: FIRE WALK WITH ME | CREW CREDITS

The back inside curtain panels contain a partial listing of the crew and a brief listing of music heard in Lynch’s 1992 feature film. Long before the incomparable “Twin Peaks Archive” was released in the early 2010s, this would have been one of the few locations to find song titles of tracks not included on the official soundtrack release. Those songs include “Blue Frank,” “Double R Swing,”  “Deer Meadow Shuffle” and the “Requiem in C Mineur” by Luigi Cherubini as performed by The Ambrosian Singers and Philharmonia Orchestra from 1982.

The credits list the band who played at the US/Canadian bar as “The Power & The Glory” and included Steven Hodges, David Jaurequi, Andy Armer and Don Falzone.

In 1994, these musicians recorded a few songs David Lynch wrote for an album that was released in 2009 titled, “David Lynch Presents Fox Bat Strategy ‎– A Tribute To Dave Jaurequi.” Its release was prompted by Jaurequi’s passing in 2006. Smokey Hormel joined the band on one track playing slide guitar. I love this album as it was from a time when this was the only new Twin Peaks-related item available. Sadly, it’s out of print but second hand shops may have it.

Spelling Films International Logo

There are also logos for CIBY PICTURES which was founded as CIBY 2000 by Francis Bouygues in 1989. He formed the company after retiring from Bouygues SA, one of the world’s top construction groups he created in 1952. Bouygues’s film-financing firm supported international cinema projects and help fund Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me.

Guild Entertainment, L.T.D. is also listed as it was the United Kingdom’s biggest independent home video distributor.

The logo for Spelling Films International is also seen. Once a part of the Spelling Entertainment Group, Aaron Spelling created Spelling Films International in 1990 to help with film distribution in international markets. In 1995, the company rebranded itself to Spelling Films and became “an in-name only unit and the print logo appeared on covers.” Spelling Films was shut down in 1998 by majority owner Viacom (known today as Paramount Global), who wanted to pool resources into Spelling Television.

The running time is listed as 135 minutes which is still used today on theatrical cuts of the film.

PUBLICITY PHOTOS FROM THE UNITED KINGDOM PRESS KIT

The press kit I picked up at auction only contained three publicity photos. I know there are more than what is presented below, so this article will be updated when I acquire the rest of them. Fortunately, these photos are numbered using “TP-X” which should make it easier finding the missing images. Each image includes the note, “Release by Guild Film Distribution, Ltd.”

I imagine there are eight to 12 photos in this set. Unfortunately no complete list exists online which is what motivates me to do this work of archiving my favorite David Lynch film. They will be found in time.

  • TP-1 – Laura Palmer and Dale Cooper in the Red Room.
  • TP-2 – ???
  • TP-3 – Bobby Briggs, Laura Palmer and Donna Hayward outside Twin Peaks High School.
  • TP-4 – Laura Palmer standing in the doorway of her dream world.
