Beyond Ken Saito: Discovering Takanori Higuchi, the Actor Behind Twin Peaks’ Most Mysterious Visitor

Taka Haguchi

For many Twin Peaks fans, Takanori Higuchi will forever be remembered as Detective Ken Saito—the earnest Tokyo investigator who arrived in Twin Peaks searching for his missing fiancée in David Lynch’s surreal Georgia Coffee commercials of the early 1990s. Sharing scenes with Agent Dale Cooper, the Log Lady, and the familiar denizens of the Double R Diner, Ken felt like a genuine Twin Peaks character—curious, polite, determined, and just slightly out of place.

But Ken Saito is only one chapter in Higuchi’s long and fascinating career. Outside of Twin Peaks, Taka Higuchi is a major figure in Japanese genre entertainment, an international character actor, a teacher of the craft, and today, an active creative force developing new independent projects that connect with his passion for the arts.

From Twin Peaks to Japanese Pop Culture Icon – Who is Takanori Higuchi?

While Western audiences encountered Higuchi through the Georgia Coffee commercials, Japanese audiences already knew him as a powerful screen presence. Born in Osaka Prefecture, Higuchi built his career across film and television beginning in the late 1980s, eventually becoming best known for roles in tokusatsu—Japan’s special-effects–driven action and fantasy genre that includes Ultraman, Super Sentai, and Kamen Rider.

The Cult-Favorite Role: Another Agito

In 2001, Higuchi appeared in Kamen Rider Agito as Dr. Kaoru Kino, a surgeon who becomes Another Agito—a darker, more feral counterpart to the main hero. Unlike traditional masked heroes, Kino is haunted, conflicted, and emotionally raw. Higuchi’s performance gave the character tragic weight, turning Another Agito into one of the most memorable anti-heroes of the franchise.

Other Genre Highlights

  • Ultraman Dyna (1997) – Appears in the opening episodes as Takeru Fudō, a rival pilot with intensity and bravado.
  • Tokuso Sentai Dekaranger (2004) – Plays Don Moyaida, an alien crime boss, showing his range as a charismatic villain.

Story Game (2023)

In 2023, Takanori Higuchi appeared in the U.S.–Japan supernatural anthology film Story Game, directed by Jason K. Lau. The movie revolves around three American college students who, while traveling through Hawaii, challenge one another to tell the scariest Japanese folklore story—their tales then play out on screen as interconnected horror shorts.

Teacher, Mentor, and Keeper of the Craft

In 2002, Higuchi founded Actor’s Training Center, an acting school dedicated to practical, emotionally grounded performance. His work as a teacher reflects a deep respect for discipline, tradition, and character psychology.

Much like Twin Peaks itself, Higuchi’s philosophy emphasizes interior life over spectacle, mystery over exposition, and emotional truth over surface realism.

Looking Ahead: Haru – The Wandering Sword Woman

One of Higuchi’s most exciting current projects is HARU, a new Japanese action-fantasy film being developed through Kickstarter. Framed as a mythic sword tale rather than a conventional action movie, HARU follows a fierce swordswoman bound by an ancient curse—one rooted in cycles of fate, reincarnation, and spiritual consequence.

At its core, HARU is not simply about combat, but about identity and memory. Haru’s battles are shaped as much by her past lives as by her enemies, with themes of destiny, karma, and rebirth driving the story forward. The project draws from Japanese folklore and traditional aesthetics, blending visceral swordplay with a reflective, almost dreamlike tone that will feel familiar to fans of spiritually layered storytelling.

Through Kickstarter, Higuchi and the creative team are inviting fans to help bring this independent vision to life. Especially exciting for Twin Peaks Fans is the inclusion of never before seen behind the scenes Georgia Coffee artifacts taken from Taka’s personal collection. Details will be shared in February at a special sneak preview during an exclusive “Twin Peaks Japan” panel at the upcoming Real Twin Peaks Days.

Be sure to follow Taka on X @takahiguchi11 or on Instagram @takahiguchi11, to find out how to participate directly in a culturally rooted fantasy project that values atmosphere, myth, and emotional depth as much as action.

He is an independent creator reaching out directly to fans. Like Twin Peaks itself, his career lives in the space between two worlds—Japan and the U.S., television and cinema, commerce and art, the familiar and the unknowable.

For fans who have always wondered who Ken Saito really was, the answer is richer, stranger, and more rewarding than you might expect. I had the privilege of meeting Taka in November and was taken by how personable he was. He was so generous with his time and shared a number of stories which we will be covering in future articles as well as the upcoming Real Twin Peaks Days “Twin Peaks Japan” panel.
