The Mystery of Georgia – Part 2 – the Marketing Campaign

On the week of September 21st, 1992, just weeks after the US Premiere of Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, David Lynch began filming a set of commercials in Los Angeles that were somewhat… familiar. The result was quite unusual.  In January, 1993, Twin Peaks flickered back to life in an unexpected place: Japanese television commercials. Commissioned by Coca-Cola to promote its Georgia canned coffee brand, Lynch reunited Kyle MacLachlan and several other cast members for a series of four surreal ads that together formed a mini-storyline titled The Mystery of G.

These commercials were never aired outside of Japan, making them one of the strangest and most fascinating “lost chapters” of the Twin Peaks universe. Each spot condensed the atmosphere of the show into 30 seconds of dreamlike imagery:

  • Part 1: Lost – A Japanese woman named Asami Hara vanishes in Twin Peaks; Her fiancé, Ken Saito enlists Special Agent Dale Cooper help him find her.
  • Part 2: Cherry Pie – A clue from Asami’s car bring Cooper and Ken to the RR Diner.
  • Part 3: A Mystery of “G” – Analyzing the latest clue at the Twin Peaks Sherriff’s station, with the help of Andy and Hawk, they realize that the clue is actually a map.
  • Part 4: The Rescue – Cooper and Ken go to Glastonbury Grove. Cooper rescues Asami and solves the mystery. Georgia Coffee itself becomes the symbolic reward.

These commercials were shot by Ron Garcia and produced by Monty Montgomery. Each commercial was done in Lynch’s signature style leaning heavily on offbeat humor with a tinge of the ever-present tension between charm and dread. One of the greatest things to come of this was some of the most unique, fun and exciting marketing materials that were distributed throughout Japan.  I recall seeing glimpses in Wrapped in Plastic Magazine or on AOL Groups and was absolutely floored at how well produced the materials were.

The Campaign Ephemera

Like many high-profile Japanese advertising campaigns of the era, The Mystery of G was not just about television exposure. It spawned a wave of collectible memorabilia—items now highly sought after by Twin Peaks fans and collectors of vintage Japanese advertising. I have scoured the internet to try and find and document everything I possibly could find. I have also created translations as some of the backstories of Ken Saito and Asami are quite fun to read!

Posters and Point of Purchase Displays

Probably the most famous of all the Georgia campaign ephemera. High quality posters were produced and given to Grocery Stores as well as train stations to promote the products. Early reports and rumors were that the posters were so popular that they kept getting stolen. It must have ben so incredible to have been in Japan in early 1993 where one could walk the streets and literally see posters of Dale Cooper displayed everywhere! Some posters were also tucked away as inserts in magazines. As there was never any official catalog numbers for the marketing items, I am making up catalog numbers to help differentiate between variations.

Poster A

Photo above compliments of John Thorne. Probably the most common of all Georgia Posters. A variation of Poster “A” also was released as a vertical poster.

Poster B

Poster “B” similar to Poster “A” had what I believe to be a vertical advertisement using the same photo. Photo above compliments of John Thorne.

Poster C

Photo above compliments of John Thorne. Poster C was specifically made to promote the Mocha Kilimanjaro seasonal brand. Translations are as follows:

Main Vertical Text (Right Side)

モカ キリマンジャロ 50% 50%
Mocha Kilimanjaro 50% / 50%

→ This means the blend is 50% Mocha beans and 50% Kilimanjaro beans.

Speech Bubble (Upper Left)

珈琲飲みの夢だった。
“It was a coffee drinker’s dream.”

(Old-style, slightly poetic phrasing — nostalgic and aspirational.)

Bottom Left (Launch Notice)

新登場
New release / Newly launched

Blend Breakdown (Bottom Left Box)

モカ 50%
Mocha 50%

キリマンジャロ 50%
Kilimanjaro 50%

Posters A-C have been confirmed to be 11.75″x16.5″ however other dimensions may have been produced.

Poster D

Poster “D” is the rarest of the horizontal posters. This one I’ve only seen a single poor quality image online. Translation below:

Main Phrase (appears multiple times)

ジョージアに、まかせろ。
Jōjia ni, makasero.

“Leave it to Georgia.”
or more naturally in ad English:
“Trust it to Georgia.” / “Georgia’s got you covered.”

Starburst Text (Center Left)

コクとキレがちがう。
Koku to kire ga chigau.

👉 “The richness and the sharpness are different.”
More ad-natural:
👉 “A different level of richness and clean finish.”

Nuance:

  • コク (koku) = body, depth, richness

  • キレ (kire) = clean finish, sharp aftertaste
This is classic Japanese coffee evaluation language.

Poster E

This one seems to be one of the few vertical posters. I have not seen this one in person and only found it on a Reddit thread since removed.

Top Right (Large Vertical Headline)

価格がニュースだ。
サイズがニュースだ。

“The price is news.
The size is news.”

Nuance:
This is punchy, headline-style copy. It implies the deal is so good it’s newsworthy.

Top Left (Brand / Legal)

Enjoy GEORGIA

Below the Cans (Small Text)

Large Text Above the Price

Nuance:
おてごろ means “easy on the wallet,” “good value,” or “just right in price.”

Price (Bottom, Very Large)

Manufacturer’s suggested retail price (before tax)

Door Sized Poster

One equally rare poster is the full sized Kyle MacLachlan Door poster. I’ve seen only one ever on a reddit thread that is long gone. Thankfully I saved the image and was able to restore this one a bit similar to the one above. Also to note, the photo used in this image was also used to create a full size stand-up that I can only imagine was paired with a tower of Twin Peaks Branded Georgia cans.

Here the variation is that Kyle’s signature is moved to the top right corner by Kyle’s shoulder. The translation of “ジョージアに まかせる.”Jōjia ni makaseru. as always is “Leave it to Georgia.”

The above photo came from an excellent Japanese Twin Peaks book that came out in 2017 from MOOK.

Magazine Ads

Magazine ads were produced, often blending familiar Twin Peaks imagery with Georgia Coffee branding. The best thing about the magazine ads is that not only are they highly polished and stylistically designed but they also tell a deeper story about the commercial series.

Main Narrative Paragraph (bottom right)

前章まで、失踪した妻・麻美を追ってツイン・ピークスへとやって来た健は、FBI特別捜査官デイル・クーパーと捜索を続けた。

Up through the previous chapter, Ken, who came to Twin Peaks in search of his missing fiance Asami, continued the investigation with FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper.

Magazine Advertisement E

Top Right (Slogan)

ジョージアに、まかせろ。
Jōjia ni, makasero.

“Leave it to Georgia.”
Natural ad English: “Trust Georgia.”

Nuance:

  • まかせろ is the strong, confident imperative form

  • Masculine, reassuring, almost heroic in tone

  • Stronger than まかせる (“you can rely on…”)

Vertical Text (Right Side)

25年後に、また会いましょう。
25-nen go ni, mata aimashō.

“Let’s meet again in 25 years.”

Nuance:

  • また = again

  • 会いましょう = “let’s meet” (warm, mutual, forward-looking)

I love how this seems to be a direct callback to Laura Palmer’s “I’ll see you again in 25 years…” This was an unexpected translation and nice to see. While it is difficult to confirm whether this was a magazine advertisement or a poster, I’ve categorized it as an ad based on the dimensions.

Pre-Paid Video Rental Card

What I originally thought was a 1990’s phone card turned out to be a Pre-Paid Video rental card. In the early 1990s, cards like this were part of Japan’s pre-digital rental ecosystem. Rather than being used for payphones, it functioned as prepaid or membership card for video and CD rental stores, with remaining value tracked physically through punched holes. Issued by companies like Culture Convenience Club (the parent of TSUTAYA), these cards sat at the intersection of media, technology, and everyday life—small, utilitarian objects that reflected how people accessed movies, music, and information just before the internet and mobile phones transformed everything. In Japan especially, both pre-paid video rental and phone cards became ubiquitous—and unexpectedly collectible—often featuring limited-edition artwork tied to movies, TV shows, pop idols, and advertising campaigns. I especially love the artwork on this as it looks almost like a theatrical poster to the Georgia Series.

Mugs

Branded Georgia Coffee mugs tied to the campaign occasionally surfaced as part of in-store promotions. These items captured the crossover between the coffee brand and the show’s own central beverage motif. At least two variations were made that we can tell. One that included the Georgia Twin Peaks logo on one side with the Georgia Brand logo on the other and the other with a Kyle MacLachlan graphic that also included his signature.

Clothing

Would you believe they even made some Georgia Branded Twin Peaks clothing. Two items we are aware of is a stylish hoodie and a blue baseball cap.

Keychains

Special Edition Georgia Coffee Cans

Limited-run cans were printed with Twin Peaks-inspired labels, featuring imagery from the commercials. These remain the most iconic and difficult-to-find items, as many were consumed and discarded at the time. As such we dedicated an entire article to them.

Legacy

While The Mystery of G was designed as a regional ad campaign, it has since taken on legendary status among Twin Peaks devotees. The commercials are now widely circulated online, originally preserved by fans who originally taped them off Japanese TV and later ripped from the Twin Peaks Gold Box set. The campaign represents not only a fascinating marketing crossover but also an early example of Twin Peaks as a transnational phenomenon. Today, the surviving memorabilia—cans, mugs, posters, and phone cards—serve as tangible artifacts of this surreal collaboration between David Lynch’s world and Japanese pop culture. For collectors, these pieces are more than just advertising tie-ins. They are rare relics from a moment when Twin Peaks escaped the confines of American television to become a global pop-cultural curiosity, briefly bottled—quite literally—in a can of Georgia Coffee.
