Ever since I first saw Episode 1001 of Twin Peaks, I’ve wondered about the outfit Donna Hayward wears in this scene. It’s the only time in the series that she wears this combination. On a whim, I searched “CCM Jersey 1990s” since the CCM logo is clearly visible. I instantly found two matches, with one having an rather interesting connection to the Pacific Northwest.
MISSING PIECES – DONNA HAYWARD WAKES UP
The first episode script was penned by Mark Frost and David Lynch on July 12, 1989. Additional revisions were made a month later on August 10 (Blue pages) and August 18 (Pink pages).
The broadcast scene opens when Donna descending the stairs while her mother sketches what appears to be the letter “G” on yellow paper.
There is, however, a deleted scene that would have shown Donna’s bedroom (something we never actually see in the series or film).
21. INT. DONNA HAYWARD’S BEDROOM – DAY
DONNA HAYWARD lies asleep in bed. The sound of an operatic aria drifts through the room, originating downstairs. Donna shifts, starting to waken, stretches and smiles like an untroubled angel. Then her eyes open and she remembers Laura’s death.
The outfit may have been her sleepwear since the scene implies that she just woke up.
I wonder if the track “La Speranza” which is heard later in this first episode during the Briggs’ dinner scene was supposed to play at the Hayward’s house instead. The script makes no mention of it at the Briggs’ home.

22. INT. HAYWARD LIVING ROOM – DAY
Donna enters the room, where her mother, EILEEN, sits in her wheelchair doing some elaborate needlepoint, listening to the opera on the hi-fi.
DONNA
Mom? Mom?
(Eileen doesn’t hear her)
EILEEN
Oh, good morning, dear, I didn’t hear you come down.
She uses a remote control to turn down the volume of the hi-fi and takes her daughter’s hand.
It’s this particular on-screen moment when Donna gives her mother a kiss that sparked my search for the CCM jersey.
CANADA CYCLE & MOTOR COMPANY JERSEY
A CCM logo is clearly seen on Donna’s jersey, which originally stood for Canada Cycle & Motor Company Limited. Located in Weston, Ontario, Canada, the company first opened its doors for business September 1889. Today, the company is headquartered in Montreal.
According to the company’s website, they turned their attention to ice hockey gear in the early 20th Century:
“By 1905 the market for bicycles in Canada began to decline with market saturation and seasonality playing key roles. Experimentation with importing and the manufacturing of automobiles also did not work out. It is at this point that the sport of ice hockey was growing rapidly and CCM decided to endeavor into the market place with the launch of the CCM Automobile Skate. Within 30 years CCM dominated the hockey skate market with over 90% of all players wearing CCM skates with the remaining percentage being divided amongst seven other manufacturers. In fact, the NHL scoring champions between 1939 and 1969 all wore the world famous Tackaberry hockey boot with the CCM Prolite blade.”
TWO HOCKEY JERSEYS
Like so many things in Twin Peaks, I found two different hockey jerseys that resembled the one Donna wears.
The first was created in the 1980s for the National Hockey League (NHL) team the Hartford Whalers. Originally a part of the World Hockey Association from 1972-1979, the Hartford, Connecticut-based team joined the NHL in 1979 due to a league merger. The Whalers used the green, blue and white colors between 1979 and 1992. In 1997, the team relocated to North Carolina where it became the Carolina Hurricanes.
The neckline appears similar to the one that Donna wore in the episode. I’m assuming that CCM sold a blank version without the Whalers’ logo emblazoned on the front (I found other blank jerseys from that time).
But this is where it gets interesting. As I dug deeper, I found a connection to Washington state that made more sense as to why Donna would wear this particular color jersey.
Enter the Seattle Thunderbirds, a Western Hockey League team originally founded in 1971 as the Vancouver Nats. They moved to Kamloops, British Columbia in 1973 and became the Kamloops Chiefs. In 1977, they ventured south to Seattle and were renamed the Seattle Breakers. Following the 1984-85 season, the team had new owners and a new name – the Thunderbirds.
According to their Wikipedia entry, the 1989-90 season was one of their most successful:
“The 1989–90 season was the best regular season in Thunderbird history, and arguably the greatest team the franchise has ever iced. Seattle finished the season at 52–17–3, which included a 44–8–3 record in their final 55 and the #1 ranking in the final Canadian Hockey League Regular Season Top Ten poll. The team finished 33–2–1 at home tying a WHL record for most home wins.”
Interestingly, they use the same colors – navy, green and white – as the Hartford Whalers did in the 1980s. The colors are also reminiscent of the National Football League team – the Seattle Seahawks.
After a lengthy exchange with her mother about James Hurley and Laura Palmer, Donna closes the scene with a tender hug.
Granted, we may never know if this outfit was a nod to that winning Seattle hockey team, yet at least I know where to find one in case I want to dress like her one day.
