One of the more mysterious and iconic symbols from Twin Peaks is first seen in Episode 2018 from Season 2. Agent Dale Cooper and the Twin Peaks Sheriff’s Department descend into a cool subterranean cave known as Owl Cave. After a series of events that causes Deputy Andy Brennan to strike the cave wall, the Owl Cave Petroglyph is revealed. It also happens to be the June 6 release for the Twin Peaks 30th Anniversary Collection by Society6 artist Kathryn Sich from Yesterday Collection
THE PETROGLYPH
This repeating pattern design is pretty much a direct lift from the Owl Cave symbol seen in the episode.
Upon seeing this symbol, Agent Cooper muses about it leading to a place both “wonderful and strange” (which was the subject of artist Anna Dorfman’s artwork on June 2).
A version of this symbol was found on the event page for the Twin Peaks 30th celebration at Graceland, from Oct. 30-Nov. 1, 2020. (Sadly, this event never happened due to the COVID-19 global pandemic).
THE PRODUCTS
Similar to Chris Bergeron’s “Red Room” design released on June 3, the Owl Cave Petroglyph artwork is found on a smorgasbord of items via Society6.
One of the surprise items for me is the Black Lodge Credenza. But if I really wanted to be hip, I’d chose the fanny pack. Who knew that Society6 had this many options?!
SPOONFLOWER FABRIC
I also found this print available as fabric from her Spoonflower shop.
The Owl Cave Petroglyph is just one of several Twin Peaks-inspired designs she has available as fabric. I particularly love the Great Northern Hotel pattern as I immediately recognized the design.
THE ARTIST
A West Seattle-based textile designer with a BA in Fashion Design, Kathryn Sich has been trained in the fine arts since childhood, and has a broad amount of experience in all aspects of art and design. She began her higher education as a Fibers major at The Maryland Institute College of Art before earning a degree in Fashion Design from Marymount University in Arlington, Virginia.
In addition to fashion, Kathryn has also always enjoyed packaging design, interior design, and furniture design/carpentry. Her main area of interest is textiles, feeling it is the perfect marriage of fashion and interiors. She loves designing conversation-worthy fabrics for both the home and the wardrobe. While her style is quite eclectic, her work is most often inspired by Postmodern art and the Memphis Milano design movement of the 1980’s.
