Continuing my look at the costumes worn by actors in Twin Peaks, this Costuming Peaks article focuses on Audrey Horne (played by Sherilyn Fenn). Audrey’s outfits, much like her character, matures throughout Season 2.
COSTUMING TEAM
Costume Designer Sara Markowitz and Costume Supervisor Laurie L. Hudson took over costuming duties from Patricia Norris in Seasons 1 and 2.
Markowitz, whose other credits include Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, Coyote Ugly, Boy Meets World and The Big Bang Theory, shared her perspective about Audrey Horner in Brad Dukes’ “Reflections: An Oral History of Twin Peaks.”
“The evolution of Audrey Horne was interesting: beginning as a girl smoking in the bathroom of school in her tight sweater and pencil skirts to working at Horne’s Department Store then to One Eyed Jack’s undercover as one of the prostitutes. There was a maturity in her costumes, although a softness always evident as daddy’s little girl through a soft fabric of a blouse or bow in a headband. The loss of the black and white saddle shoe was also a sign of maturing.”
EPISODE 2001
The Season 2 opener picks up with Audrey Horne at One Eyed Jack’s, attempting to hide from her father. I love the little detail of the Queen of Diamond cards on her corset from the former Playmates store in Hollywood.
Audrey creatively hides from her father using a cat-shaped mask until a “S-N-A-G” draws his attention away.
Later, we see Audrey has changed outfits (most likely the negligee was purchased at Playmates too). Her bright red heels make a triumph return.
This publicity shot from The Mauve Zone provides an alternate view of this scene.
By the end of the episode, Audrey has changed again to a longer black negligee. Either Audrey brought all those outfits with her or Black really takes care of her employees.
EPISODE 2002
After commandeering an ice bucket, Audrey is seen wearing the same long, black negligee in Episode 2002.
By the end of the episode, she has changed into the outfit she wore when leaving the Great Northern Hotel on her quest.
Here’s the outfit in Episode 1006, complete with her black and white saddle shoes.
The camera pans down to her shoes as we see Blackie’s hand pressing down on the phone receiver.
An alternate shot of this scene was originally posted on DavidLynch.com.
The scene and episode ends with harsh words from Blackie to a rather upset Audrey. The Mauve Zone shared another publicity / behind-the-scenes shot from this episode. I still haven’t figured out Audrey’s strategy for revealing herself to Emory Battis. She had to know he’d say something.
EPISODE 2003
Still sporting her saddle shoes in Episode 2003, we see an drugged-up Audrey laying on a bed in One Eyed Jack’s. She will wear this outfit for the next few episodes.
EPISODE 2004
Audrey and Jean Renault after he kills Emory in Episode 2004.
EPISODE 2005
Audrey being rescued by Special Agent Dale Cooper in Episode 2005.
EPISODE 2006
After being rescued by Cooper, Sheriff Truman and Deputy Hawk, Audrey is taken to the Bookhouse. This close-up provides a better look at her pink sweater.
EPISODE 2007
Upon returning to The Great Northern Hotel, Audrey confronts Ben about One Eyed Jack’s. The button-down plaid shirt she’s wearing reminds me of one that Deputy Dale wore in Episode 2013. Is that actually his shirt?
While it’s similar, Dale’s shirt doesn’t have the same buttons as Audrey’s. Besides, Deputy Dale’s “muted earth tone”-look wouldn’t happen for a few more episodes.
Audrey takes her concerns about Ben Horne to Special Agent Dale Cooper.
The outfit is pretty much a reverse of what she wore to One Eyed Jack’s. Symbolic perhaps that the experience reversed her thinking.
EPISODE 2008
Audrey visits Agent Cooper in his hotel room during Episode 2008.
No more saddle shoes.
EPISODE 2010
In Episode 2010, we see Audrey comforting Sarah Palmer at the Hayward house following Leland’s funeral.
Later in the episode, she’s changed outfits when she visits Agent Cooper. Her plaid skirt from Season 1 has returned.
One assumes this is the same skirt, which could have also been from Sherilyn Fenn’s personal collection.
More looks at Audrey’s outfit from Episode 2010.
EPISODE 2011
Audrey and Dale dance during the Milford wedding reception at the Great Northern Hotel dining room.
EPISODE 2012
I love this shot of Audrey waiting to pounce on her father’s new friend – Bobby Briggs.
More looks at Audrey’s vintage blazer from Episode 2012.
EPISODE 2013
The first appearance of a gray blazer in Episode 2013.
Audrey is seen checking on her father. I also adore this long shot of Audrey standing in the hall at The Great Northern Hotel.
EPISODE 2014
After Windom Earle knocks out the town’s power, Audrey is seen discussing ice cubes with Bobby Briggs in the Great Northern Hotel lobby.
When Jerry Horne arrives to check on his brother’s condition, Audrey is seen sporting all black.
EPISODE 2015
Episode 2015 brings a new outfit for Audrey while monitoring her father’s behavior in the lobby of his hotel.
This episode also begins a trend of slow camera pans of Audrey from her shoes to her hair. It begins with the bottom of her cream-colored, two-piece antebellum day dress.
The camera slowly pans up and lands on Audrey’s head. She’s also wearing a wig with ringlets.
When she uses binoculars to spy on her father across the room, she’s wearing gloves.
Here’s a better look at her entire outfit as Ben pulls up on his fake horse.
EPISODE 2016
Another pan-up shot of Audrey takes place in Episode 2016 when she is on her way to the concierge desk.
The camera shows she’s wearing an early 1950s beige, two-piece, big weave suit.
As she approaches the Concierge desk, we catch a glimpse of the back of her jacket.
A close up of her outfit is seen both at the Concierge desk and in her father’s office.
By dinner time with John Justice Wheeler, Audrey’s outfit has changed.
As she leaves, we get a look at the black skirt with grey, thin fuzzy sweater.
For the “meeting of angels” at The Roadhouse, the crew added a camel-colored full length coat to her outfit.
EPISODE 2017
Another episode, another slow pan up Audrey’s outfit.
She slowly walks the runway toward the camera while the sounds Windom Earle’s shakuhachi flute plays.
After Dick Treymane speaks with the models, Audrey approaches him  now sporting the suit jacket she had over her sleeve on the runway.
When John Justice Wheeler takes Audrey on a picnic, she added a navy and cream herringbone 50s style jacket. Most of the shots in this scene are closeups
As the scene fades, we get a better look at their set up.
This publicity photo from The Mauve Zone is incredible. It gives a better look at the two love birds during the picnic scene.
During the fashion show, she is wearing a red suit.
Better scene when John Justice Wheeler catches her from the stage.
EPISODE 2018
A different grey-blue suit jacket is seen throughout Episode 2018. It looks similar to the outfit she wore in Episode 2013.
Audrey wears it at the front desk, at the Twin Peaks library and while leaving her father’s office.
EPISODE 2020
Audrey isn’t in Episode 2019 but she returns from her trip in Episode 2020.
The cream and navy herringbone jacket Audrey wore to her picnic with Jack is seen again at The Great Northern Hotel.
Audrey’s top is a pale blue ribbed short-sleeved turtleneck.
Her herringbone jacket has a red lining which is seen while she flags down John Justice Wheeler’s airplane.
EPISODE 2021
Hey look – another pan-up shot of Audrey Horne. This time she’s sitting by the fireplace in her father’s office.
She’s wearing a “ridiculous” red chiffon formal sleeveless dress.
The chiffon dress also has a belt with gold buckle. In her hair are red bobby pin things to keep it pinned back.
For the Miss Twin Peaks Contest, Audrey wears a black velvet, princess-style dress with a cocktail-length skirt and black chiffon top.
More looks at her stunning outfit during her speech.
EPISODE 2022
By the final episode, Audrey’s dressed as a young professional woman. Gone are the saddle shoes and plaid skirts.
The pale pink short-sleeve turtleneck is similar to the short-sleeve blue one she wore in Episode 2020. I wonder if it’s by the same manufacturer.
Our last look at Audrey as she stages a protest at the Twin Peaks Savings & Loan. She doesn’t reappear until 25 years later for Season 3, which is another article for another time.
