More Missing Pieces – The Atmospheric Scenes

More Missing Pieces - The Atmospheric Scenes
Little Man from Another Place and BOB from a deleted scene in Episode 2022.

If I had a nickel for every time I’ve watched Twin Peaks, I’d be dead. As part of my More Missing Pieces series, I’m taking a closer look at scenes from the Twin Peaks Blu-ray set released in 2014. On that set, you’ll find short videos edited around a singular theme (e.g. “the Woods,” “Coffee,” “The Ring”). The atmospheric videos contained some extended or deleted scenes not found on previous releases. In the days before Season 3, seeing these scenes was such a treat. They were the first new items from Twin Peaks since the outstanding Twin Peaks Archive soundtrack release a few years prior. In this article, I’ll try to determine where these scenes could have been used in Seasons 1 and 2.

One of the first scenes that caught my eye has the Sheriff Truman’s vehicle crossing an old steel bridge. More than likely it’s a transition shot from the Pilot Episode.

UPDATE OCTOBER 17, 2019

C.C. Devers Bridge
October 12, 2019

This scene was shot on the Clarence C. Devers Bridge located on South Lewis Street in Monroe, Washington.

It appears the vehicle is crossing the Meadowbrook Bridge in Snoqualmie, Washington, which is the bridge that Truman and Cooper cross when following James Hurley and Donna Hayward.

It’s the same bridge also seen in the background when Special Agents Desmond and Stanley first visit Carl Rodd at the Fat Trout Trailer Park.

I originally wrongly identified the Meadowbrook Bridge in Snoqualmie, Washington as the bridge they used. That bridge is used in Twin Peaks but not for this scene.

As you can see, the Clarence C. Devers bridge has a longer span and different bridge supports in the water that better matches the deleted scene. It’s just down the street from the Palmer House whose exterior was seen in Seasons 1 and 2 of the series.

THE WOODS – PART 1

The Woods

It’s the first of several “Woods” scenes that were probably planned to be used as transition shots.  The image above reminds me of a scene found in Episodes 2010 and 2017.

The Woods
2010 and 2017

It could have been shot just off the side of the road in the image above. Granted the color timing is different compared to the broadcast episode.

MOSS-COVERED WOODS

An additional scene in the atmospheric videos shows moss covered woods. They woods reminded me of the “Subscribe” tag on the Showtime videos from Season 3.

The moss-covered trees probably aren’t the same from the original atmospheric footage but they could have been shot in the same area.

MORNING AFTER POND

When I saw this shot, I was immediately reminded of the morning after scene when Sheriff Truman is seen sitting in Glastonberry Grove.

It’s probably not from the same sequence but it definitely had a similar vibe.

WIDE ANGLE RIVER IN THE WOODS

Woods and River

Wide angle woods

It was exciting to see this shot of a river running through the woods. It appears to be an unused wide angle shot. There are two different versions used in the atmospheric videos

River in 1004
1004
River in 2002
2002

They used cropped shots of this location in Episodes 1004 and 2002. It could also be the location where Benjamin Horne and Leo Johnson met in the woods (probably somewhere in southern California).

Following a visit to Monroe, Washington on October 13, 2019, I located the spot where this was filmed! It’s the Skykomish River in Al Borlin Park. See more details about this river HERE.

CLOUD-COVERED MOON

Clouded moon through trees

In a recent Setting the Stage article, I discussed the moon’s appearance in Twin Peaks. This short transition scene seems to have a cloud-covered moon. Most of these transition scenes could have been used in a variety of episodes (similar to how the falls or traffic lights were used several times throughout the series.

DOUBLE R DINER SIGN

I can now add two more images to the Vacant Peaks article featuring the Double R Diner. These shots don’t appear in the series, but aren’t they fantastic?

Judging by how the sky appears, the shots are from the Pilot Episode just before Heidi the waitress arrives.

NIGHTHAWKS SOBER UP

Nighthawks at the Double R Diner Nighthawks at the Double R Diner

This scene could be from the original Pilot Episode script when it was titled “Northwest Passage.”

EXT. DOUBLE “R” DINER – DAWN
Open for business Two Diesel rigs idle in the oil-stained gravel lot outside. A couple of nighthawks sober up at the counter. A pretty country-western ballad plays on the jukebox inside.

The scene was described early in the script as part of a series of town establishing shots.

The Nighthawks image was shot from the front right widow of the Double R Diner (as seen in the image above). You may notice a “137” on the far left side of the image

That same “137” can be seen in the background of this photo of Don Davis and me outside the Mar-T Cafe in August 1996.

I also wonder if the waitress in the scene is actually Pat Cokewell, who operated the Mar-T Cafe for 21 years.

BLUE RIVER

Blue river

If this shot seems familiar, it’s because you will find it in the opening credits from Season 1 and 2.

River in Pilot Episode
1000

The biggest difference is the brownish-red color timing that was used in the series. I’m guessing the blue river was how it actually appeared when they captured the footage.

BOATER ON BLACK LAKE

Black Lake

It’s very short but there is a brief scene of a boater on Black Lake. In the series, we don’t see him leaving the dock.

The footage was probably captured for Episode 1005 when Donna meets James at the Gazebo. We see the boater again in Episode 2006 when Maddy and James meet at the dock.

REFLECTIONS ON FEBRUARY 5

Laura Palmer and James Hurley Laura Palmer and James Hurley Laura Palmer and James Hurley

This is such a great shot of Laura and James. I believe it was outtakes from Episode 1001 where James remembers what happens on February 5.

Laura and James are wearing the same outfits as the reflection images. We also see the reflection of James as she breaks the “Best Friends” heart necklace. I do recall a time (long before high-definition video) when some people thought that reflection behind Laura was actually her father Leland screaming.

There is a brief extended scene of the Little Man From Another Place grabbing Laura Palmer’s hand in the Red Room.

1000 – International Ending

The scene is similar to one seen at the end of the International Version of the Pilot Episode. The Little Man From Another Place is seen grabbing Laura’s hand and then cuts to a close up.

KILLER BOB IN THE RED ROOM

Hat tip to fellow Bookhouse Boy @Igorinoleoni for pointing out two scenes I missed. The first is Killer Bob in the Red Room.

The final sequence of images comes from a deleted scene that would have been found in Episode 2022. It’s spectacular so I left it for last. The expressions on Killer BOB’s (Frank Silva) face are haunting, creepy and fantastic!
