In April 2012, Copro Gallery in Santa Monica, California held a group art exhibition for the 20th Anniversary of Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me. The exhibition was curated by Rob Wilson in association with David Lynch. Today I’m taking a closer look at the piece by SHAG (aka Josh Agle) titled “An Old Woman and Her Grandson.”

The exhibit opened on April 21 with a reception from 8:00-11:30 p.m. at the gallery in Santa Monica. Artwork remained on display until May 12. The press release above comes from the Copro Gallery website.

Here is an image of the flyer about the exhibition, which lists Josh Agle (SHAG) as one of the first artists included in the event.

I was surprised to find Copro Gallery still had a preview of the artwork created for the event available online. Above is a sampling of artists included SHAG’s work. His acrylic-on-board piece measured 16-inches by 39-inches. It was instantly sold yet remained on display during the event. If I recall correctly, I thought the piece had a retail of $3,400. I remember I really wanted the original but the price wasn’t in the budget at the time.

The Copro Gallery website also included photos from the opening night event held on April 21. I found this one of exhibit curator Rob Wilson with SHAG next to the original work.

The artwork had a prime spot, located by itself under the exhibition’s title. Immediately to the left of this piece, Dean Hurley spun Lynch-inspired tunes throughout the night.

It was great seeing SHAG at the event. I had spoken with him during his visit to Florida in 2011 for the 40th Anniversary of Walt Disney World Resort. I had also been to his gallery in Palm Springs a few times. I recall he was curious if anyone would purchase a print based on the artwork he created for the event. I told him I would be one of the first in line. More on that in a moment.

The artwork was spectacular to see in person! Being a long-time fan of SHAG’s work, I never thought I’d see him create a piece for my favorite television show and David Lynch film.

Here’s a closer look at details from the original work. Notice the brushstrokes and little nods to the Lynch’s masterpiece film – the ring, Fat Trout Trailer Park utility pole, Saturn lamp from the Red Room, the framed doorway photo, and an owl.

On November 10, 2014, SHAG released a limited edition print inspired by his original work created for Copro Gallery. The screen print piece had an edition size of 150 and measured 42-inches by 21-inches. Each print was signed by SHAG.

In December 2014, I received a framed print as a gift – number 34/150. It was my first framed piece by SHAG and I was left speechless.

The piece was similar to SHAG’s original work yet there were some differences.

In particular, the brushstrokes seen on the original were not present and some of the icons were modified (compare the Saturn lamps or the owl). But I’m not complaining as the entire work is breathtaking, especially with the red matting and black frame.

Here are some additional looks at the screen print.

When I visited his Palm Springs gallery on March 27, 2015 and saw one of the framed screen prints was still available.

I shared the news on Twitter – the print was $450 unframed and $900 framed. Sadly his original Palm Springs store was damaged by a fire in April 2017. He reopened the store in a new spot in October 2017. He also has a gallery / store in West Hollywood. It appears this print is no longer available on his online store.

  1. Interesting to see the small differences between the original an the print, didn’t know about that before reading your article.
