Late in the Pilot Episode of Twin Peaks, Sheriff Harry Truman and Special Agent Dale Cooper return to the Twin Peaks Sheriff’s Department. Upon entering the Conference Room, they are greeted with carafes of coffee and lots of doughnuts neatly stacked in rows on a table. Cooper surveys the set up and remarks it looks like “a policeman’s dream.” But how many pastries make up “a policeman’s dream?”
HOW MANY DOUGHNUTS ARE IN A POLICEMAN’S DREAM?
The total number of pastries on the table is 52. While the majority of the pastries are doughnuts, the set up also includes what appears to be either eight “bear claws” or possibly “honey buns.”
WAGON-WHEEL DO-NUTS
Sheriff Truman says Lucy sets up doughnuts and coffee every night at the Twin Peaks Sheriff’s Station. Most likely, she got the doughnuts from Wagon-Wheel Do-Nuts, a local doughnut shop described in the first draft of Episode 1.001.
The location was briefly seen in a deleted scene from Season 1 where Deputy Andy Brennan and Lucy pick up an order of doughnuts. The real location is the former Monrovia Bakery in Monrovia, California. Look carefully and you’ll see the shop’s sign on the sidewalk.
While it’s difficult to see the sign in the deleted scene, we get a glimpse of it in a video from C.O.O.P. (Citizens Opposing the Offing of Peaks) who visited the Twin Peaks set in 1991.
WHAT KIND OF DOUGHNUTS ARE INCLUDED IN A POLICEMAN’S DREAM?
Lucy mentions she left “extra jelly doughnuts for Agent Cooper,” yet he appears to eat a powdered sugar doughnut. He breaks the doughnut into four smaller bites (probably to make delivering his lines easier to do).
So next time you are holding a Twin Peaks viewing party, order the “policeman’s dream” to ensure there is enough sweet treats for everyone!
