Twin Peaks Location – Mr. C and Jack at the Self Storage Unit

After a lively dinner conversation over spaghetti, Mr. C and Jack (Steve Baker) visit a self storage unit to switch automobiles in Twin Peaks – Part 2 on Showtime.  Mr. C then says “goodbye” to Jack after squeezing his mouth for approximately 30-seconds. After searching for this location since March 2018, I finally located it thanks to the blue metal doors and round tanks.

WHERE IS THE SELF STORAGE UNIT IN TWIN PEAKS LOCATED?

Torrance RV Parking and Storage Units is located at 23711 Crenshaw Boulevard in Torrance, California. The facility may have been constructed in the late 1970s as the area once was home to Gray’s Good Earth Nursery.

At first, I thought the scene may have been shot near Hawthorne, California which is where Mandy’s Family Restaurant  was located (spot for dinner conversation with Ray, Darya, Jack and Mr. C). My thinking was they probably shot the scenes around the same time since Steve Barker only appeared in this episode.

While searching the Hawthorne area, I found a US Storage Centers facility which had blue metal doors that appeared to match the doors in the episode. I visited their website and looked at every location in southern California, starting with Alhambra. When I got to Torrance, I knew I found the spot because of the storage tanks located next to the facility.

Here’s a brief overview of where some of the scenes were shot at this location courtesy of Google Maps.

Behind the Curtain – Part 2

According to the Behind the Curtain footage from Part 2, this scene was shot during the afternoon on October 27, 2015. In the morning, the crew completed scenes at Eat at Rudy’s (named Eat at Judy’s in Part 18) located in Wilmington, California. The self storage unit is about a 16-minute drive from the restaurant.

Thankfully Google Maps Street View offered a look at this spot. The area where Jack and Mr. C stand is the storage unit second in from the left.

This behind the scenes footage is truly incredible. I’m so thankful it was shared with super passionate fans like me. Lynch typically uses a two camera set up when capturing footage – an “A” and a “B” camera – which allows for action to be captured at different angles.

While the key exchange is shown from the opposite angle as when Jack closes the door, the Behind the Curtain footage has an awesome shot of Cinematographer Peter Deming being pushed on a track toward the actors. On-set photographer Suzanne Tenner is seen in the center. Shortly after, she will capture the publicity shot seen at the top of this article.

The yellow pole can be seen in the previous Street View image. The tanks are seen in the image above.

When this first aired in May 2017, I couldn’t get enough of this scene. We learn later in the episode that Mr. C killed Jack.

As the scene ends, David Lynch says, “Beautiful. You’re a good guy Jack.” Steve and Kyle MacLachlan then share a laugh on the Camera A monitor as Lynch and Sabrina Sutherland look on.

A behind the scenes image from Twin Peaks Part 2 surfaced online with David Lynch demonstrating how to squeeze Steve Baker’s mouth while Executive Producer Sabrina Sutherland sits nearby. Suzanne Tenner captured the shot during filming of this scene.

On-set dresser Mike Malone is seen by the garage door wearing the Atlanta Falcons t-shirt. Kyle MacLachlan stands nearby dressed as Mr. C. Second Assistant Director Ime Etuk is standing behind Steve.

This scene is his final performance in the series as his character was killed by Mr. C. As for Steve Baker, I’ve found virtually nothing about him online. At one point he used the name “Ludo Wolfbain” as an actor and appeared in several films in the 1980s. Wherever you are Steve, thanks for bringing Jack to life.
