Twin Peaks Publicity – Spelling Films International – Gerard and the Man From Another Place Speak In Unison

I recently acquired an incredible collection of publicity photos and slides from my favorite David Lynch film, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me. These images were released by Spelling Films International in 1992 for markets outside the United States. I previously highlighted a photo from a deleted scene at the Fat Trout Trailer Park. This robust collection contains rarely seen images from Lynch’s masterpiece including this photo of Gerard and the Man From Another Place in the Red Room.

WHAT IS SPELLING FILMS INTERNATIONAL?

The publicity photo was printed by Spelling Films International which was Aaron Spelling’s Spelling Entertainment Group formed in 1990 to help with film distribution in international markets. Originally named Spelling Films International, the company rebranded itself as Spelling Films in 1995. According to the Audiovisual Identity Database, Spelling Films International became “an in-name only unit and the print logo appeared on covers.” In 1998, Spelling Films was shut down by majority owner Viacom (known today as Paramount Global), who wanted to pool resources into Spelling Television.

GERARD AND THE MAN FROM ANOTHER PLACE SPEAK IN UNISON

On-set photographer Lorey Sebastian captured this black and white publicity photo from Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me. It shows Philip Gerard (Al Strobel) and the Man From Another Place (Michael J. Anderson) speaking in unison in the Red Room.

The scene is most likely from the moment when the Man From Another Place gets up from his chair and places his hand on Gerard’s shoulder. You can see Gerard’s mouth slightly open just before the scene cuts to BOB.

A close up of BOB’s face looking down at Gerard and the Man From Another Place fills the screen. The script from August 8, 1991 describes scene 229.

(in unison)
Bob, you’re not going home without me. I want all my garmonbozia. (corn).

Most likely, Lorey captured the moment when Gerard and the Man From Another Place both said “Bob…” but we don’t see it on screen.

The publicity photo may have also been from another take where Gerard and the Man From Another Place are both looking at BOB. I will never know without the script supervisor’s annotated script.

In the theatrical release, the Man From Another Place looks at Gerard when speaking in unison. The on-screen dialogue is different from Bob Engels and David Lynch’s script which omits “you’re not going home without me.” The “corn” description of “garmonbozia” was replaced with “pain and sorrow.”

The image is reminiscent of this publicity photo from the Czech Republic which show both characters looking at BOB. A color version of the black and white publicity photo in this article is probably floating out there somewhere (when I find it, I’ll update this story).

WHO IS LOREY SEBASTIAN?

Lorey Sebastian was credited as the “Still Photographer” for Lynch’s 1992 film.

She began her career in 1977 as the still photographer on the set of Joan Micklin Silver’s film Between The Lines. Born in New York City in 1944, Sebastian eventually moved to Los Angeles, California. She had more than 100 film credits including The PlayerCrash, St. Elmo’s Fire, True Grit, Twilight, Hell or High Water and Hostiles.

Lorey was briefly married to John Sebastian from the band, The Loving Spoonful. In 2018, she retired and moved to Truchas, New Mexico with her two dogs. She passed on May 9, 2022 at the age of 78 following a brief illness.

I can’t wait to share more of Lorey’s work in the coming months.
