It’s getting close to bed time so let’s all say “good night” to Special Agent Dale Cooper. This publicity photo was scanned from a photo slide I acquired via an online auction. It’s a still photo taken during Twin Peaks episode 1.002 just before Cooper’s strange dreams of the Red Room, Laura Palmer’s cousin, BOB and more.
SPECIAL AGENT DALE COOPER SLEEPING IN TWIN PEAKS EPISODE 1.002
This publicity photo shows Special Agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) asleep in his bed in room 315 at The Great Northern Hotel. The image was captured during filming of episode 1.002 (#2) in December 1989 during production of the show’s first season.
I scanned the image from this photo slide which contained handwritten actor credits for “Twin Peaks” along with the name Howie and Hollywood News Service. There is little information about this company other than the late Roger Asquith may have managed the company in the 1960s.
According to his author page on Prestbury Books, Asquith first “operated a radio in the Royal Air Force and was later trained as a Marine Radio Officer in London. He then set sail around the world on British, Australian, Swedish vessels and finally the hell ship known as the CUBAN TRADER.
After a year as a trainee TV cameraman for the CBC in Canada, Roger went to Hollywood. Unable to get a job in television. Roger first worked in the sound department at Walt Disney on the dubbing of Lady and the Tramp into foreign languages, the managed the HOLLYWOOD NEWS SERVICE writing articles for British, Australian and American magazines where he hobnobbed with stars from Elvis Presley, Bette Davis, George Cukor, Marilyn Monroe to Lucille Ball.”
This publicity slides was shared with news publications for use in newspapers, magazines and other printed sources.
CLOSER LOOK AT DALE COOPER SLEEPING

The scene with Cooper sleeping takes place in act four of episode 1.002. The original script by Mark Frost and David Lynch contains additional action and dialogue not found in the broadcast version. The televised version uses scenes originally filmed for the International or European cut of the pilot. Coop turns out the light and closes his eyes.

After a beat, he is seen laying flat in his bed. This is the moment when the publicity photo was taken. It was captured at a different angle than Frank Byers camera set up.

The camera cuts do another angle which includes a zoom in on sleepy Dale.

Later, Cooper is show laying on his side as his strange dreams continue.

At one point, footage from Cooper’s dream from the International pilot ending is included in the edits. You can see he has a different pillow and the background is different than the set constructed for the first two seasons.

Inevitably, the dream comes to an abrupt end after dream Cooper hears the name of Laura Palmer’s killer whispered in his ear.

He throws back the bedspread and sits up in bed to call Sheriff Harry S. Truman. Cooper will be seen sleeping again at the start of the second season.
