Closer Look at the Twin Peaks Fright-Scope Reel Pack by Fright-Rags

Twin Peaks Fright-Scope Reel Pack packaging

I love that in the year 2026, Twin Peaks fans continue to find unique merchandise featuring Mark Frost and David Lynch’s groundbreaking show. A few weeks ago, I shared a look a the Twin Peaks Fright-Scope Reel Pack being released by Fright Rags, the leader in quality horror-related apparel and accessories. I couldn’t wait to dissect the item to see what three-dimensional photos were included in this toy that’s reminiscent of my childhood.

TWIN PEAKS FRIGHT-SCOPE REEL PACK

Fright Rags Viewfinder Reel Pack for Twin Peaks

The officially licensed Twin Peaks Fright-Scope Reel Pack contains three reels with 21 images total. Each reel pack is $15.00 US.

The packaging was created by Kyle Crawford (@kyleisez) who is no stranger to designing Twin Peaks-themed merchandise for Fright-Rags. He designed previously released lounge pants, a fantastic Double R Diner shirt, and other wonderful and strange apparel. The packaging can be resealed to keep reels protected when not in use. Here the the front of the pacakging without the reels.

Twin Peaks Fright-Scope Reel Pack packaging

The back of the card contains a stylized image of the Welcome to Twin Peaks sign along with brief descriptions of each photo included in the three reels. There is also a synopsis of Frost and Lynch’s series:

FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper is tasked to investigate the murder of homecoming queen, Laura Palmer, in the small town of Twin Peaks. Along the way, he unravels the dark secrets and bizarre, supernatural elements hidden beneath the town’s idyllic surface. The investigation reveals the complicated double lives of the residents and delves into a supernatural world of parallel dimensions and otherworldly entities.

The packaging indicates a line to cut that opens the pack. But it’s not necessary to follow as the pack slides into a clear plastic sleeve.

Fright Scope Viewfinder

In order to view the reels, you need to have the Fright-Scope View Finder set. You simply insert the reel into the retro style viewfinder and pull down on the lever to advance the shot. Each reel as two of the same images, so when viewed through the viewfinder, they appear three-dimensional.

TWIN PEAKS FRIGHT-SCOPE REEL A

Twin Peaks Fright-Scope Reel

The Twin Peaks Fright-Scope Reel A contains seven Twin Peaks publicity photos. I assumed they used several common publicity shots for the unique merchandise item. I scanned the individual photos at a 4800dpi so I could enlarge and correct each shot. Fright-Rags assigned descriptions to each of the shots. I also discovered that some images are either printed backward or have incorrect descriptions.

REEL A | 1.  LONG LIVE

Laura Palmer's homecoming queen photo

The Mauve Zone

The first image is Laura Palmer’s Homecoming Queen photo with the title “Long Live.” It’s a cropped shot from one of several Homecoming Queen photos originally taken by on-set photographer Kimberly Wright.

REEL A | 2.  ONE VERSE

Ben Horne at the Great Northern Hotel

The Mauve Zone

The second image is titled “One Verse” and features Ben Horne on the set of the Great Northern Hotel. The image is again cropped from the original publicity photo. Interestingly, the “one verse” title probably refers to the discussion Ben and his lawyer Leland Palmer had in the Twin Peaks pilot about the Packard sawmill land. Ben said, “We have solid information that the Packard Sawmill is gonna go belly-up within a year. We’re gonna be able to get it for a song. One verse, no chorus.”

The yellow-hued publicity photo is from Twin Peaks episode 2.005.

REEL A | 3.  BIG ED & JAMES

The third shot from Reel A is titled “Big Ed & James,” which is taken from a publicity shot created for Twin Peaks episode 2.001.

REEL A | 4.  BOYFRIEND MATERIAL

Bobby Brigss

Bobby Briggs
The Mauve Zone

Dana Ashbrook as Bobby Briggs is seen in the fourth image titled, “Boyfriend Material.” He’s on the set of the Great Northern Hotel and wearing the outfit seen at Dr. Jacoby’s Office in Twin Peaks episode 1.005.

REEL A | 5. AUDREY’S DREAM

Audrey Horne at One Eyed Jacks

Audrey Horne at One-Eyed Jacks
The Mauve Zone

Audrey Horne appears twice in this reel pack set. The first is fifth image from Reel Pack A where she is dressed in attire from One-Eyed Jacks.  The image is titled “Audrey’s Dream,” which should probably be called “Audrey’s Nightmare” after the awkward encounter with her father Ben at the Canadian casino and brothel.

REEL A | 6. DAMN FINE DECTECTIVES

Special Agent Dale Cooper and Sheriff Harry S. Truman

The Mauve Zone

The greatest law enforcement duo, Sheriff Harry S. Truman and Special Agent Dale Cooper, are found in the sixth image titled, “Damn Fine Detectives.” The cropped shot omits much of the fallen deer head found on the Twin Peaks Sheriff’s Department conference room table.

REEL A | 7. JOSIE

Josie Packard

The Mauve Zone

The final shot in the first reel is titled “Josie” and features Josie Packard standing in the Blue Pine Lodge library. Fellow Twin Peaks Blog author Vinnie Guidera wrote about a prop found in the background of this scene – a December 1984 issue of Esquire magazine.

TWIN PEAKS FRIGHT-SCOPE REEL B

Twin Peaks Fright-Scope Reel

Reel B from the Twin Peaks Fright-Scope Reel Pack contains another seven Twin Peaks publicity images.

REEL B | 1. LELAND’S SECRET

Leland Palmer

Leland Palmer holding a photo frame
The Mauve Zone

The first image in Reel B is titled “Leland’s Secret” and features Leland Palmer on the set of the Palmer house. The cropped shot omits the fact that Leland is holding an 8-by-10-inch photo frame (which I assume has a photo of his daughter Laura).

REEL B | 2. AUDREY & DONNA

Maddy Ferguson and Donna Hayward

Maddy Ferguson and Donna Hayward at Harold Smith's apartment
The Mauve Zone

The second image from Reel B is titled incorrectly. Fright-Rags describes the image as “Audrey & Donna” but it should be “Maddy & Donna” as the image is from their attempt to steal Laura Palmer’s secret diary from Harold Smith’s apartment. Audrey and Donna do have only a few moments together in Twin Peaks such as the “dreamy music” scene at the Double R Diner in episode 1.002 or later when Donna enlists the help of Audrey to spy on Ben Horne and Eileen Hayward in episode 2.018.

I’m assuming this was an accidental oversight as someone had Audrey on her or his mind. To paraphrase Agent Cooper, get your mind off Audrey, just for a moment.

REEL B | 3. TECHNICOLOR DREAM SPECS

Dr. Lawrence Jacoby wearing glasses

Dr. Lawrence Jacoby is found in the third photo from Reel B. Titled, “Technicolor Dream Specs,” the publicity shot has the psychiatrist sporting his iconic red and blue glasses.

Jacoby’s outfit is found in Twin Peaks episode 2.010 when the town is gathered at the Hayward house for Leland Palmer’s wake.

REEL B | 4. ENTER THE RED ROOM

The Red Room

The fourth image from Reel B is titled, “Enter the Red Room.” It’s a hallway shot from the Redroom complete with the Venus of Arles statue best seen in Part 2 of Twin Peaks: The Return.

Twin Peaks: The Return, Part 2

I’m assuming this is a publicity image that I have not found. I recreated the shot by removing Cooper’s hand from the red drapes on the left side of this screencap.

Venus De Milo statute in the Red Room hall
Twin Peaks, Episode 2.022

At first, I thought it was the Venus de Milo statute seen in the Red Room from Twin Peaks, episode 2.022. But the slide has a different pose and is more white in color making it the statue from Part 2.

REEL B | 5. WELCOME WAGON

Welcome to Twin Peaks Sign

“Welcome Wagon” it the title of the fifth image from Reel B. It’s a “Welcome to Twin Peaks” sign with a population of 51,200 which is different than the original Welcome sign with a population of 51,201.

Welcome to Twin Peaks sign

The 51,200 sign appears to have been made for the Japanese market. The missing “1” is because Laura Palmer died and therefore wouldn’t be counted in the population total.

REEL B | 6. FUNERAL IN F MINOR

Laura Palmer's funeral with people standing near her grave

The iconic scene from Laura Palmer’s funeral scene from Twin Peaks episode 1.003 is found in the sixth image from Reel B. It’s titled “Funeral in F Minor.”

There are multiple versions of the funeral photo but the Fright-Rags Reel contains this one which has the characters solemnly looking down.

REEL B | 7. WRAPPED IN PLASTIC

The final image for Reel B is titled “Wrapped In Plastic” and contains the notable shot of Laura Palmer, dead and wrapped in plastic on the rocky beach at Blue Pine Lodge in the show.

TWIN PEAKS FRIGHT-SCOPE REEL C

Twin Peaks Fright-Scope Reel

The third reel – Reel C – the Twin Peak Fright-Scope Reel pack contains another seven publicity photos from the series.

REEL C | 1. PIE & PROPHECY

Exterior of the Double R Diner

The first image features the Double R Diner exterior and the red neon “RR” sign affixed to the Mar-T Cafe sign. The title is “Pie & Prophecy” which I can only conclude they meant that this is a prophetic location in the series.

This is the uncropped image of the Mar-T Cafe in North Bend, known today as Twede’s Cafe. Most likely, this photo was taken on the first day of principle photography for the Twin Peaks  pilot on February 21, 1989.

REEL C | 2. DOUBLE-R EYES

Shelly Johnson in Double R Diner uniform

Shelly Johnson is seen in the second photo with the title, “Double-R Eyes.” This photo was also taken on February 21, 1989 when Mädchen Amick was on-set in the Mar-T Cafe in North Bend, Washington during the first day of filming the pilot.

REEL C | 3. “DIANE…”

Special Agent Dale Cooper holding a tape recorder

The Mauve Zone

Special Agent Dale Cooper holding his trusty tape recorder is seen in the third image from Reel C. The image is titled, “Diane…” which is a nod to Cooper’s unseen secretary, Diane Evans, in the first two seasons of the show. If I had a nickel for every time this publicity photo was used on merchandise, I’d be dead.

REEL C | 4. LOST YEARS

Audrey Horne at Twin Peaks High School

The fourth image is titled “Lost Years” and shows Audrey Horne in class at Twin Peaks High School. This photo was taken at Mount Si High School in Snoqualmie, Washington during filming of the Twin Peaks pilot in February – March 1989.

The shot is a cropped publicity photo with the original containing the bright red shoes Audrey changes into a few moments earlier in the hallway.

You can see part of a student’s sweater who is seated behind Audrey in the pilot episode.

REEL C | 5. CONFESSIONS OF A TEEN MECHANIC

James Hurley

The fifth image in Reel C is James Hurley at Laura Palmer’s funeral on episode 1.003. The image is titled “Confessions of a Teen Mechanic” which must be a nod to James’ adventures with Evelyn Marsh later in the second season.

The reel photo, however, is reversed when compared to the original publicity image.

REEL C | 6. THE FUR SISTERS

Josie Packard and Catherine Martell

The sixth image in Reel C has an odd title, “The Fur Sisters.” It’s a shot of Josie Packard and Catherine Martell standing on the steps of Blue Pine Lodge (in reality it’s Kiana Lodge in Poulsbo, Washington).

Josie Packard and Catherine Martell
The Mauve Zone

Josie is wearing a fur coat in the scene but Catherine is not. I guess they are sisters but more like sisters-in-law as Catherine was a sister of Josie’s husband Andrew Packard.

REEL C | 7. DEPUTY COOL

Deputy Andy Brennan

The final image for Reel C is Deputy Andy Brennan from the Twin Peaks Sheriff’s Department.

The Mauve Zone

Similar to the James Hurley image, the photo of Deputy Andy is reversed. Look at the badge placement, which should be found over his heart.

All said, it’s exciting to have new merchandise for Twin Peaks. If you want a trip down memory lane, please pick up this inexpensive reel pack. I spent countless hours as a child playing with my View-Master. This Reel Pack is something I would have never thought possible in the early 1990s.
