Peggy Lipton and Mädchen Amick are featured in this black and white publicity photo from David Lynch and Mark Frost’s Twin Peaks. Released in advance of the show’s network debut on April 8, 1990, the image was used in newspaper articles about the show. I believe I found the exact paper were this particular photo I acquired at auction was used.
PEGGY LIPTON AND MÄDCHEN AMICK – 27223A-7-10

This black and white publicity photo was taken by the late ABC Television photographer Craig Sjodin. It’s part of a sequence of images that included individual shots of both Lipton and Amick along with some photos with Dana Ashbrook who played Bobby Briggs. You may recall, I shared a previous square publicity photo of Mädchen from this shoot in this Twin Peaks Blog article.

Sjodin worked for ABC and Disney for 39 as a still photographer. He passed on September 15, 2023 as a result of injuries sustained from a bicycling accident.
The image was distributed on March 20, 1990 and contains the catalog number 27223A-7-10.
The caption reads:
Peggy Lipton and Mädchen Amick, two friends who work together at the Double R Diner, share secrets about their loves and lives on the hour-long dramatic series, “TWIN PEAKS,” which begins with a special two-hour premiere, SUNDAY, APRIL 8 (9:00-11:00 p.m., ET), on the ABC Television Network. The program will premiere in its regular time period, THURSDAY, APRIL 12 (9:00-10:00 p.m., ET). Photo credit: Craig Sjodin/ABC. JP 3/20/90 27223A-7-10
The image contains crop marks (the letter “K” symbol at the top). These marks indicated where exactly the image should be cut to fit the newspaper.

This is how it appeared in The Modesto Bee on August 26, 1990. I’ve now confirmed that the publicity photos I acquired at auction were from the newspaper’s archive (or at least from someone who was involved with the paper).

The closest full-color image I could find on The Mauve Zone has slightly different facial expressions for this duo. I’ve been unable to locate a full-color version of the black and white image above.

Another similar shot has Lipton and Amick looking directly at Craig Sjodin’s camera.

The Johnson House set was used for the backdrop, best seen in Twin Peaks episode 1.005 (#5).

The actors are wearing outfits seen when their characters Shelly and Norma return from a “day of beauty” in episode 1.005.
This episode was filmed sometime around the week of either Nov. 20-24 or Nov. 27-Dec. 1, 1989. There were several scenes at The Log Lady’s home in Malibou Lake Mountain Club filmed on Nov. 22. It could be the publicity department grabbed the cast for these photos in between takes. Without production paperwork for these specific scenes, it’s difficult to confirm.
In case you are looking to recreate Norma’s outfit, I discovered she is wearing an overcoat by Dior.
LIPTON AND AMICK’S PUBLICITY PHOTO IN NEWSPAPERS

Other newspapers besides The Modesto Bee printed the photo, such as the Palladium Item on April 8, 1990 that ran the photo in a “Special Highlights” box.

The Tallahassee Democrat also ran the image on April 8, 1990, the day the Twin Peaks pilot debuted on the ABC Television Network.

When the show was rebroadcast on ABC in August 1990, newspapers, such as The Times Herald, ran actor profiles. This article details other shows and films where Dana Ashbrook and Mädchen Amick appeared.
