Australian Ad for ‘Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me’ on VHS from April 1994

Ad for Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me

For Twin Peaks Blog, I love finding things I’ve never seen during my three-decades long obsession with David Lynch’s Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me. This time, it’s a full-page advertisement for the home video release in Australia. This is virtually nothing about this April 14, 1994 release online so I’m delighted to share it with you today.

AUSTRALIAN AD FOR TWIN PEAKS: FIRE WALK WITH ME ON VHS FROM APRIL 1994

This full-page advertisement was included in an online auction I acquired in 2025 containing clippings about David Lynch and Mark Frost’s Twin Peaks. I’m grateful for those individuals who save things like this as they are rare gems for this ever-growing archive about my favorite show.

Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me Ad

The ad features artwork similar to the North American advertising campaign with Laura Palmer from the Red Diamond City Motel scene pictured in a half-burning heart necklace against the Red Room with black and white chevron floor. The caption reads:

“These are the last seven days of Laura Palmer … The critically acclaimed TV Series chronicled the aftermath of the mysterious death of Laura Palmer. Now see how Laura spent her last seven days in this intriguing chilling prequel. Available April 14, 1994.”

Interestingly, the ad highlights four actors from the film and includes other films they appeared in – Sheryl Lee (I Love You To Death), Moira Kelly (Chaplin), David Bowie (The Last Temptation of Christ) and Kyle MacLachlan (The Doors).

Like advertising found in Japan, Bowie must have been perceived as a big box office draw for the Australian market. It’s interesting the ad highlights Martin Scorsese’s 1988 film as David Bowie appears briefly in it as Pontius Pilate. Clearly, it doesn’t matter as Bowie was larger than life.

Moira Kelly played two characters in Chaplinshe is seen early in the Chaplin biopic as the comedian’s first love, Hetty Kelly, 15. Late in the film she plays Oona O’Neil, 18. I assumed they would have highlighted her 1992 performance in The Cutting Edge (as that is how I was first introduced to the actress).

I’ve been unable to confirm the cover artwork for this 1994 release but I assume it may be similar to the full-page ad. If you own a copy from April 1994, please drop me a line – thetwinpeaksblog@gmail.com – and please include a photo if you are so inclined.

The Age, Dec. 13, 1993

Following a one-night only screening during the 42nd Melbourne International Film Festival on June 13, 1993, Australian Twin Peaks fans would have to several months before Lynch’s 1992 masterpiece was released in Sydney and Melbourne theatres on November 4 and December 9, 1993, respectively. Theatres continued screening the film until Wednesday, January 12, 1994.

The Press and Standard, January 6, 1993

In North America, the VHS of Lynch’s film was released on January 6, 1993. I admire Australian fans who are truly patient folks for waiting 15 months before they could own a copy.

The full-page ad was found on the back of the cover page for the March 1994 issue (No. 42) of Video magazine. This issue featured a story about Tom Cruise and discussed release release of Benny and JoonThe Last Action Hero, Hot Shots 2 and Boiling Point.

Based on limited search results, it appears this magazine started publication in the early 1980s but is no longer available today.
