Twin Peaks Location – Horne’s Dining Room From Pilot

In the Twin Peaks pilot, there is a brief scene between Sylvia Horne, her daughter Audrey and Johnny’s nurse. The dining room is different than the one seen in episode 1.002 when Jerry Horne returns from Paris. The dining room from the pilot was captured while the crew was on location at Kiana Lodge in Washington in March 1989.

WHERE IS THE HORNE’S DINING ROOM FROM THE TWIN PEAKS PILOT LOCATED?

The Kiana Lodge, located at 14976 Sandy Hook Rd NE, in Poulsbo, Washington served as both the Blue Pine Lodge and the Great Northern’s interior in the Twin Peaks pilot episode.

Postcard of Kiana Lodge

The structure was built in 1929 and first opened in 1937 as Edgewater Beach and Country Club – a vacation destination for nearby Seattleites looking to get away from the city. The property boasts 1,000-feet of waterfront and 6-acres of gardens and is now a popular wedding venue.

The Today, the Suquamish Tribe owns the location. While they welcome visitors, they ask you give their paying clients their privacy and plan to visit when there are no events going on. Call ahead to check on their schedule – (360) 598-4311. The dining room scene took place inside the original 1930s building where the fireplace scene between Ben Horne and Leland Palmer took place. The scene was shot on March 18, 1989 as part of the last days of location filming in Washington.

The spot is just to the left of the fireplace near the spiral staircase.

THE HORNE RESIDENCE KNOWN AS THE GRANGE IN THE TWIN PEAKS PILOT

According the “Northwest Passage” script from Dec. 7, 1988, the Horne residence was adjacent to the Great Northern Hotel and was known as “The Grange.”

EXT. GREAT NORTHERN HOTEL – DAY
We drift from the hotel over to “The Grange”; a large, adjacent manor house, the private home of Benjamin Home.

The script contains scenes with Johnny Horne in an upstairs bedroom. The action cuts to Sylvia and Audrey Horne seated at the dining room table while Johnny’s nurse descends the spiral staircase. The script doesn’t mention the staircase which was probably an on-location decision.

INT. GRANGE DINING ROOM – DAY
SYLVIA HORNE, Johnny’s mother, Benjamin’s wife, and Audrey Horne, her daughter, sit at the dining room table, having tea from a sterling tea service. Strained silence. Audrey stares at the heel of her black leather pump. Sylvia hears approaching footsteps and presses a hand to her forehead in exasperation. A NURSE enters the room.

We see the sterling tea service but we never see a black leather pump mentioned in the script.

During my first visit to Kiana Lodge on Aug. 9, 1996, I took this photo of the area. At the time, I had no idea the dining room scene was in this room. You can see the spiral staircase and the giant mirror in the distance. Those blue couches were really something!

Fellow Twin Peaks fan Jared Lyon took this photo of the spot on Aug. 19, 2002, which gives a better look at the original wooden spiral staircase.

NURSE
Mrs. Horne, I think it might help if you’d talk to Johnny yourself–

SYLVIA
(pained sarcasm)
Oh, you think it might help? You tell Johnny, one more time, that Laura is not coming to work with him this afternoon, tomorrow afternoon or any afternoon. What is so difficult to understand about that?

The broadcasted episode contains the same scripted dialogue.

When I finally returned to Kiana Lodge after a 23 1/2 year hiatus, the spiral staircase was replaced with a more modern version.

Three years later, I visited Kiana Lodge again to photograph the spot. This time, the wooden door next to the spiral staircase was open. It’s a bathroom, since this area is often used as a room for wedding couples to prepare for their ceremonies.

WHO PLAYED JOHNNY HORNE’S NURSE IN THE TWIN PEAKS PILOT?

Johnny Horne’s nurse was played by Seattle-based actor Laurel Anne White. She’s been acting  appearing in numerous theatrical productions since 1976. She also appeared in Seven Hours to Judgment (1988) and the more recent television show Penelope (2024). In mid-January 1989 through February 4, she stared in the Tacoma Actors Guild production of “Vikings” playing the part of Betsy. A review of the play from The Olympian on Jan. 19, 1989 said she was “an equity actress with widespread credits.”

THE GIANT MIRROR BEHIND THE DINING ROOM TABLE

The giant mirror leaning against the wood paneled wall is still in the same room at Kiana Lodge. I found it during my visit in 2020.

I lightened the shadows in this image from the pilot to capture details of the mirror. I also found the chairs along the wooden wall during my visit in Feb. 2023.

Here is a closer look at the mirror.

This scene is incredibly short. We’ll seen Jan D’Arcy again in Twin Peaks episode 1.002 and 2.022. I can now add this location to my ever-growing list of Twin Peaks locations.
