On the same day David Lynch’s “Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me” debuted at the Cannes Film Festival, audiences in Japan flocked the theatres in the thousands to see the prequel to the groundbreaking television show. Ticket sales for the movie have reached 450,000 since its may 16 premiere and was expected to run through the summer. ‘We’re booked into more than 100 theaters around Japan,’ says Taku Ushiyama of Nippon Herald Films Inc., the movie’s Japanese distributor. ‘That’s the equivalent of a 2,000-theater release in the U.S. This is going to be one of the top 10 films of the year.’” The film was a box office success in Japan, grossing $2.9 million.
