Setting the Stage – The Hayward House Exteriors

Setting The Stage - The Hayward House Exteriors

This Setting the Stage article about the Hayward House exteriors surprised me. For some reason, I thought I would find more exterior shots of the home in Twin Peaks. Unlike the Palmer House,  only a handful of exterior shots were seen throughout Seasons 1 and 2, and Twin Peaks – Fire Walk With Me.

TWO LOCATIONS

Similar to the Palmer House and the Johnson House, there were two locations used for the exterior scenes. The Pilot Episode and Twin Peaks –  Fire Walk With Me House was located in Everett, Washington, while the house in Seasons 1 and 2 was found in Monrovia, California.

PILOT EPISODE

The first time we get a glimpse at the exterior space outside the house is in the Pilot Episode.

Donna Hayward sneaks out of her sister Harriet’s bedroom window. This scene was shot at the house in Everett, Washington. The real question is where is samurai cat today?!

Shortly after Donna sneaks out, Bobby Briggs pulls up in his black 1969 Plymouth Barracuda with Mike Nelson. This scene takes place on Grand Avenue in Everett.

We finally get a look at the green exterior of the Hayward House as Mike rings the doorbell in the Pilot Episode.

The exchange between Doctor Hayward and Mike offers only a glimpse at the location.

As Mike leaves the front porch and returns to Bobby’s car, we get a look at the side of the Hayward House and more of Grand Avenue at night.

Bobby and Mike drive away in the night which is the last scene in the Pilot Episode of the Hayward House exterior. But make a mental note of this image as it will return much later.

EPISODE 1001

Episode 1001 is the first time we see the Monrovia house in Twin Peaks. The establishing shot has James’ motorcycle parked outside the house (he’s inside enjoying some fruit punch!!).

Mike Nelson pulls up in front of Donna’s house with Bobby Briggs. This time he is driving a 1965 Buick Skylark versus the 1964 Skylark from the Pilot Episode at Big Ed’s Gas Farm.

EPISODE 1007

The next appearance of the Monrovia home is in Episode 1007. Again, I thought the exterior was shown more often throughout Season 1 (I guess I like remembering things my own way). This time, James’ motorcycle is absent.

EPISODE 2001

It’s raining in Episode 2001 when the same establishing shot is used. I think the rain is added in post production as nothing looks wet.

EPISODE 2002

The same establishing shot from Episode 1001 is used in Episode 2002 (though the color looks slightly different). This scene takes place just before the iconic “Just You” recording session with James, Maddy and Donna.

EPISODE 2017

After a long absence of the Hayward House in Season 2, there is a brief scene in Episode 2017 of Donna answering the front door for Windom Earle dressed as Dr. Gerald Craig.

Behind Windom, there is a fuzzy exterior scene that doesn’t match the Everett or Monrovia homes (clearly shot on a set).

The fuzzy exterior appears to be similar to an exterior backdrop at The Great Northern Hotel also in Episode 2017. This can be seen when Donna enters the front (or is that the side?) entrance to the Hotel while following her mother.

The only daytime exterior shot of the Monrovia home is also found in Episode 2017. Oddly, the street sign says the home is located on Lakeview Drive. The actual street is Hillcrest Boulevard which has been the name of the street in Monrovia for years. The sign was most likely added by the crew.

EPISODE 2022

2022

Remember that scene from the Pilot Episode when Bobby and Mike drive away? The tail end of that scene is featured as an establishing shot for Episode 2022. The tree, homes, and street (Grand Avenue) are located in Everett, Washington.

The establishing shot is followed by the “Ben, damnit!” scene where Doctor Hayward confronts Ben Horne in the living room. The exterior seen outside the front door doesn’t match the Everett or Monrovia homes (again, shot on a set). This scene also concludes the appears of the Hayward House in Season 2.

TWIN PEAKS – FIRE WALK WITH ME

We return to the Hayward House in Twin Peaks – Fire Walk With Me. Laura Palmer is seen walking along the sidewalk outside the Everett, Washington home.

When she calls to Donna from the sidewalk, we finally get a better look at the exterior of Hayward House in Everett.

Donna joins Laura and the two continue walking along the sidewalk on Grand Avenue. Sadly some of those magnificent trees in front of the house have been removed.

Laura later returns to the Hayward House in tears. Donna meets her at the front door. A reversed clip from this scene is briefly shown in Twin Peaks Season 3 on Showtime.

Here’s two close-up views of the front door and curtains from the Hayward House in Twin Peaks – Fire Walk With Me.

In The Missing Pieces, there is a brief scene of Donna watching Laura leaving her home. Laura stands in front of the house claiming she “is the muffin.” It gives a great look at Grand Avenue and the homes across the street. Look at the two cars parked in the driveway.

One of the two cars also makes an appearance in the Pilot Episode filmed in 1989.

The final exterior scene at the Hayward House takes place when Leland Palmer parks his car to pick up Laura.

The Hayward House does not appear in Season 3 on Showtime.
