Fellow Twin Peaks fan Elizabeth (@GoldenPonyWorkshop) contacted me via the @TwinPeaksBlog Instagram account about a special Twin Peaks-themed pop-up coming to The Summer Place Bar in San Francisco, California from Nov. 12-17, 2024.

She will be celebrating a milestone birthday during the week and bar owners Brett Frost, Leo Kaplan and mastermind mixologist Dan Hayes are marking the occasion with this themed takeover (Thank you gentlemen!!).

Frost is well known for his other themed-bar experiences in San Francisco such as Wizards and Wands (Harry Potter-themed), a Nightmare before Christmas bar for Halloween and a Mistletoe bar opening on Dec. 1. He takes theming these experiences to a whole new level.

THE SUMMER PLACE BAR

The Summer Place Bar is located at 801 Bush Street and Mason Street in San Francisco. The bar has been a staple in the Lower Nob Hill area for decades.

It was previously owned and operated by Suzy Gordon who purchased the bar from a friend in the late 1990s. At one time, it was one of the city’s last smoking bars which was allowed by law since the bar was entirely family-owned. Named for the 1959 film A Summer Place, the bar was a popular pinball enthusiast location. It’s former iconic red and white sign had a small cameo in the 2018 Marvel film Ant-Man and The Wasp.

The original bar closed suddenly with no notice in July 2020. Two years later, it re-opened with new owners in early April 2022. Today, they continue serving handcrafted cocktails in the windowless joint. You can follow them on Facebook and Instagram.

For this themed pop-up from Nov. 12-17, The Summer Place is offering speciality cocktails. I want to try them all, especially “My Mother’s Sister’s Girl” (I can hear Gordon Cole’s voice echoing in my head.

SAN FRANCISCO CONNECTION TO TWIN PEAKS

Donna Hayward holding a postcard from James Hurley

There is a San Francisco connection to Twin Peaks, best seen in episode 2.018. You may recall James Hurley leaves the town of Twin Peaks and headed south toward the city by the bay. He sent a postcard to Donna Hayward who reads aloud James’ greetings from California. Look carefully and you’ll notice mail for Jeff Moore who served as the Twin Peaks season two prop master.

I’d love to see photos if you stop by next week. And on behalf of my fellow Bookhouse Boys and Gals, we wish many happy returns of the day to Elizabeth. Hope you have a fantastic birthday! Thank you for the tip about this unique event.
