Nearly 35 years after Twin Peaks debuted on the ABC Television Network, I continue finding the wonderful and strange show is very much alive in the marketplace. This time, fashion boutique Haley Solar, located in the Eagle Rock neighborhood north of Los Angeles, California, has added limited-time, themed elements to their shop that captures the spirit of the early 1990s. During a visit to Southern California at the end of October 2024, I stopped by the store famous for its “reasonably priced cute sh*t.”
WHO AND WHAT IS HALEY SOLAR?
Small business owner Haley Solar is a creative artist who also happens to love David Lynch and Mark Frost’s Twin Peaks.
Around 2012, she began selling her Los Angeles-inspired apparel to a number of local California boutiques. The handcrafted nature of her apparel set her apart from other creators. The in-house, locally made clothing were designed, sourced, cut, and sewn using up-cycled fabrics for a more sustainable, collection with a tiny carbon footprint.
By October 2016, Haley opened Jumin Los Angeles, a 1,000-square-foot space on Eagle Rock Boulevard north of downtown and close to Glendale and Pasadena. She manufactured clothes using dead-stock fabric for the store with a Turkish name meaning “darling.”
Six month later, she introduced a self-named label using “reclaimed hand-dyed silks with mostly maxi dresses and tops manufactured in Los Angeles whereas Junim has all those elements plus offers knits, prints and outerwear.”
The Jumin Los Angeles shop was rebranded to Haley Solar on April 14, 2019 during a “Get Dressed for Spring” open house at the Eagle Rock location.
Today, there are two Haley Solar brick-and-mortar stores – in Eagle Rock located at 4606 Eagle Rock Blvd, and Silverlake, located at 3318 Sunset Blvd. They can be found online at HaleySolar.com.
TWIN PEAKS EXPERIENCE AT HALEY SOLAR
On September 26, 2024, Haley Solar announced via the Instagram account that a “Twin Peaks Experience” was coming to the Eagle Rock location. In the days that followed, more posts were made offering views of this love letter to Lynch and Frost’s series. There would also be nods to Lynch’s 1992 feature film, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me. On October 16, a fantastic Reel was posted on the account offering even more glimpses of the shop.
By this time, Haley contacted Twin Peaks Blog on Instagram about the shop. As it turns out, she referenced the site when decorating the location. With luck, I had an upcoming trip to Southern California planned and added a visit to Haley Solar on the itinerary.
When my wife Katie and I arrived on late Monday afternoon, I immediately spotted the Woodsman from Twin Peaks Part 8 attached to a utility pole outside the storefront.
Looking up, I found the oversized “Best Friends” necklace that was made out of foam. Haley posted an awesome behind-the-scenes video of how it was made.
Here is a quick video recapping my visit to Haley Solar on October 28, 2024. The level of detail in the shop is astounding and a real treat for a Twin Peaks fan like me.
INSIDE HALEY SOLAR AT EAGLE ROCK
Stepping inside the location, we were greeted with a hand-painted sign for the shop inspired by the “Welcome to Twin Peaks” sign. I grabbed a fabric log on a nearby couch and posed for a photo. From this moment, I knew I was in for a treat.
We found a number of themed displays inspired by locations throughout the series including The Great Northern Hotel, Double R Diner, Palmer House, The Red Room and the Twin Peaks Sheriff’s Department.
THE GREAT NORTHERN HOTEL DISPLAY
Haley sprinkled so many hidden treasures throughout her shop including a menu cover from The Great Northern Hotel as seen in the original early 1990s series.
Above the menu, I saw a recreated hand-drawn town map the Twin Peaks prop department made in September 1990. One of many owls found throughout the shop was perched on top of the wooden crate.
DOUBLE R DINER AREA
I loved the Double R Diner area as a bulletin board on the back wall contained several Easter eggs from the show.
Just look at the handwritten notes from Margaret Lanterman containing a line of dialogue from the show. There were several notes from Leo Johnson to his wife Shelly. You could even take a number (albeit fake) to contact Laura Palmer, Program Organizer for Meals on Wheels. Deep cut!
The Double R Diner section extended to the center of the store where I spotted a menu and coffee cups.
There was even cherry pie under glass but not as delicious as the kind Norma Jennings made.
LAURA PALMER’S DIARY
One of the most impressive displays was handwritten pages that looked like they were torn from the Secret Diary of Laura Palmer. They lined the back wall with merchandise displayed in front.
I couldn’t believe how realistic the pages looked down to the specific entries like this one from February 23.
I could hear Special Agent Dale Cooper reading this page as seen in the show.
The pages were stained and torn as if Haley had grabbed them from Harold Smith’s apartment before law enforcement could find them.
I took so many shots from this area as I couldn’t believe what she created.
THE PALMER HOUSE WALL
Moving toward the back of the shop, we arrived at a wall inspired by the Palmer House. It was complete with images of Laura’s angel photo, the framed images from the Grandmother and Grandson and the floral print located behind her bedroom dresser in the feature film.
There were at least two framed images of Laura Palmer’s Homecoming Queen photo along with a framed Palmer family photo that was a publicity shot for Lynch’s film. Haley even made the Grandson’s mask!
It was such a fun game finding images from the show and film such as the female Varied Thrush from the opening credits.
TWIN PEAKS SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT WALL
At the back of the shop, there was a wall themed to the Twin Peaks and Deer Meadow Sheriff’s Departments. She included a tree image from the Twin Peaks Sheriff’s Department’s lobby which was originally photographed by Asahel Curtis.
I also found the iconic image of Sheriff Cable bending steel, Leo Johnson’s mug shot, an evidence folder and other drawings and sketches seen in the series.
It was when I got to this display that I knew Haley Solar is most definitely a Bookhouse Gal. The framed mountain image, titled “Return from the Hunt,” on the wall is from The Roadhouse, best seen in episode 2.009 when Agent Cooper flashes a thumbs up. Another super deep cut!
I couldn’t believe she purchased a Bobby McGee’s Conglomeration Boot that was found in the Hurley House. I’m assuming most folks, aside from fellow Twin Peaks Blog author Vinnie Guidera and me would recognize it. This was such a delight to find as I knew Haley wanted to make this Twin Peaks love letter as authentic as possible.
THE RED ROOM DRESSING ROOM
On the opposite side of the shop, a black and white chevron floor was found on the back wall with red drapes that served as the shop’s dressing room.
In the center of the chevron wall, there was a neon “Bang Bang Bar” sign. Of course, no one calls it the Bang Bang Bar. It’s known as the Roadhouse.
TWIN PEAKS MERCHANDISE AND OTHER FINDS
Aside from the Woodsman and Mr. C’s Ace playing card, there were a few other nods to Twin Peaks: The Return such as this explosive image from Part 8. It was hanging above the back door.
There were several Twin Peaks-themed products sprinkled through the shop including key chains from The Great Northern Hotel and buttons with The Log Lady, Laura Palmer and Killer BOB.
I also found a handful of stickers such as “Directed by David Lynch,” Laura Palmer’s “Meanwhile” hands, or the one that I purchased for my laptop, “Fix Your Hearts” with a blue rose.
All said, our visit to Haley Solar was a success! Congratulations to Haley and her team for creating a space that super fans like me can appreciate.
My wife Katie purchased a sweater while in the shop as she was impressed with the quality and design (she studied fashion retail at The Ohio State University). So in addition to Twin Peaks, you’ll find some great items for your wardrobe.
Special thank you to Grace who was working in the shop during our visit. We appreciated her hospitality and letting us photograph everything possible.
Make plans now as the Twin Peaks-theme will continue until the end of January 2025.
