I’ve been exploring the film location for Glastonbury Grove in Episode 2022. So far, I’ve discussed the arrival of Windom and Annie as well as Cooper and Truman. Now, I’m taking a closer look at the morning after Cooper’s entrance into the Black Lodge and Annie and his eventual exit from this otherworldly place. Like all previous articles, we return to Franklin Canyon Park outside Beverly Hills, California.
The film spot for Glastonbury Grove is located at down a small hill off of Franklin Canyon Drive. You can find it at these coordinates: 34.12181, -118.40985.
THE MISSING PIECE
I’ve discussed in previous articles how the script for this episode was very different from what was televised.
For example, a scene between Truman and Andy that opens Act Two is completely missing. It includes a nod to Windom Earle’s horse costume from Episode 2020.
15. EXT. GLASTONBURY GROVE – NIGHT
Truman stands alone in the circular grove waiting for what he doesn’t know. Andy runs up behind him.
ANDY
Agent Cooper … Agent Cooper.
This scares the hell out of Truman. Andy notices the horse costume leaning against a tree.
ANDY
Sheriff, look.
TRUMAN
Stay away from that, Andy.
But Andy is already over there.
ANDY
No. No. There’s a note in the horse’s mouth.
Truman goes cautiously to him. Andy takes out the note and a net drops on top of him.
TRUMAN
(dripping)
What’s the note say?
ANDY
(barely able to read in the tangle of the net)
“Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth.”
Based on the televised version, I can understand why this scene was cut. The tone doesn’t match the darker mood that Lynch created on set.
THE MORNING AFTER
After scenes of the Washington state woods and Ronette Pulaski’s bridge, we see Glastonbury Grove in the daylight.
Here’s a similar shot from July 13, 2010 when I first visited Franklin Canyon Park.
The script describes the scene.
31. EXT. WOODS – DAY
Truman sits on a rock near the circular grove, staring into the now-closed gateway, a mask of determination. Andy approaches circumspectly. Pause.
Most likely the now-missing log was found on the right side of the image above just in front of the bushes. The background appears to match the episode image.
The broadcast version shows Andy sitting next to a transfixed Sheriff Truman who remarks that it’s been “about 10 hours since [Cooper] went in [the Black Lodge].” This would most likely mean it’s almost 10:00 a.m., assuming Cooper entered the Lodge just before midnight (as noted from the script in a previous article).
Dialogue in the script is slightly different but still revolves around food.
SCRIPT
ANDY
You sure you don’t want anything to eat?
TRUMAN
No.
ANDY
‘Cause I could call the diner they could bring something out.
TRUMAN
If you’re hungry, Andy, call. I don’t want anything. I’m not moving from here until we know where they went and when they’re coming back.
ANDY
(pause; loyal and sad)
Okay.
Andy wanders back down towards the cruiser. Truman continues to stare at the grove.
BROADCAST
ANDY
Do you want a thermos of coffee?
TRUMAN
Yeah.
ANDY
Do you want a plate special?
TRUMAN
Yeah.
ANDY
Do you want dessert?
TRUMAN
Yeah.
ANDY
Do you want pie? Harry? Harry?
Like all other parts of this scene in the the broadcasted episode, dialogue is minimal.
The scene ends with a daytime look at the oil-like substance in the portal. I attempted to recreate the shot in 2010 by pouring water around the same spot.
The trees in the reflection are most likely these which tower above the Glastonbury Grove spot.
ANOTHER MISSING PIECE
After Andy departs Truman,  there is a scripted scene with a direct nod to the Arthurian legend of Glastonbury Grove. It reminded me of cover artwork by Craig Miller with colors by Ashley Underwood for Wrapped in Plastic – No. 31. By the way, that issue has a fantastic article about the connections between King Arthur and Twin Peaks.
INTERCUT:
32. TRUMAN’S POV
Near the center of the grove the air seem to shift shape, move and alter. Truman stands, moves closer.
A GLEAMING WHITE SHIELD appears in the oscillating air and from behind it a hand holding a SILVER SWORD.
Truman is mesmerized.
He now sees that holding the shield and sword is a tall, dark WOMAN, wearing a glittering chain mail. She sees Truman, holds the sword out towards him.
TRUMAN
Oh my God… oh my God.
In a loud snap, image of the woman vanishes
The scene cuts a scripted scene of Cooper inside the Black Lodge with Windom Earle.
EXITING THE LODGE
Flash forward to the last part of Episode 2022. A bright light illuminates the red drapes at the entrance to the Lodge.
The image above is from earlier in the episode when Cooper first enters the Lodge. Most likely, it was shot at the same time only the red drapes were removed. Notice how the Sycamore tree is illuminated in the same spot in both images.
The light awakens Truman who has dozed off while sitting on the log outside the entrance.
Of course, the script has slightly different action. Truman is stretching and walking around, not sleeping.
41. EXT. WOODS – DAY
Fighting off fatigue, Truman moves around, stretching. Looking back to the grove he sees someone lying in its center. Truman runs to them. It’s Cooper and Annie, both unconscious.
Truman sees Cooper and Annie laying next to the gateway. Notice Cooper is laying facedown.
TRUMAN
Cooper? Cooper!
(into his walkie-talkie)
Andy, get that ambulance up here right now – Cooper?
He realizes there’s blood on Annie’s blouse. Cooper opens his eyes.
TRUMAN (CONTINUED)
Coop, you okay? Coop? You okay?
Cooper slowly shakes his head and closes his eyes again. SOUND of a siren in the distance.
Truman does yell “Cooper” in the televised version. He also yells “Annie” three times. The scene then cuts to a close up of White Tail Falls (aka Snoqualmie Falls).
ANNIE BLACKBURN’S DRESS
I have one final observation about this film location, particularly Annie Blackburn’s dresses in Episode 2022.
When Annie enters the Lodge, she is wearing the dress she wore to the Miss Twin Peaks Contest. Later, she is seen wearing Caroline Earle’s floral-print dress.
Annie is then back in her Miss Twin Peaks dress.
Then back to Caroline’s dress.
The final time we see Annie in the Black Lodge she is wearing her Miss Twin Peaks dress. When she leaves the Lodge, she is wearing the same dress she wore for the Miss Twin Peaks contest.
In a deleted scene from Twin Peaks – Fire Walk With Me, which takes places “Some Months Later,” she is seen being wheeled on a gurney while wearing Caroline Earle’s floral dress.
It’s the same dress she wears in Laura Palmer’s bedroom earlier in the film.
A quick change? Continuity error? Or perhaps two Annies?
