Hop in the van as it’s time for another film location article about a driving scene in Twin Peaks on Showtime. After being thrown from the hood of her car in Part 11, Shelly Briggs is helped by Carl Rodd at the New Fat Trout Trailer Park. This scene was shot in Washington state, and like other driving scenes, the magic of editing comes into play.
The scene takes place is three different areas with most of the action being captured along Boalch Avenue Northwest in North Bend, Washington. Let’s take a closer look.
The scene begins at the New Fat Trout Trailer Park shortly after Carl finds a bruised Shelly on the ground. She asks him to drive her to the Double R Diner. Carl blows into a long silver tube to summon his ride.
Magically, his 1965 Volkswagen De Luxe Station Wagon (Type 2) arrives. It has a Washington state license plate – 7N3 8YS – and is the same vehicle as seen in Part 6.
The scene cuts to Shelly and Carl riding in the van. With most driving scenes I identify, I look for background details outside the vehicle windows that don’t change often (mountains, trees, roads, etc.).
At first, I thought this scene would have taken place on Bendigo Boulevard, which is the same street as the Fat Trout. I soon realized that the street lines and trees along the roadside didn’t match. I expanded my search until I landed on Boalch Avenue Northwest.
This aerial map shows the approximate locations where most of the scene was shot along Boalch Boulevard. They start along a row of trees and end up near the Mt. Si Golf Course.
The scene continues with Shelly and Carl as the sun illuminates the inside of the van. For this area, Google Street View only has images from 2008. Bing Maps didn’t have any images from this street. This made identifying the location slightly more difficult.
Shelly wants to go faster but Carl wants them to arrive in one piece.
The scene cuts to the van driver traveling along the road. Suddenly, we are back on Bendigo Boulevard. Notice the green sign in the distance that matches the street view.
This maps shows the approximate location where the scene was shot. It’s before the turn that would take you onto Boalch Avenue.
Shelly thanks Carl for his help. You’ll notice a paved walking path outside the window. This is the point where I wish Google Street View was updated. In 2008, the paved path was only a dirt trail. I cross referenced an aerial view on Google Maps and Google Earth, both of which had more current imagery.
Shelly first calls Norma Jennings at the Double R Diner. The view of the paved path continues outside Carl’s window. There is also a stone marker that can be seen outside Shelly’s window. A view of this spot from 2015 on Google Earth confirms it was once located along Bolach Avenue.
Shelly speaks with Norma who suggests she contacts Bobby Briggs. Carl reaches for his CB to call the Sheriff’s Department. Notice the netting outside Shelly’s window. It’s from the Mt. Si Golf Course to prevent stray golf balls flying beyond their property.
A close-up shot of Carl reaching for his CB reveals a few additional details including a box of Redbird matches.
The Redbird matches were made by the Eddy Match Company founded in 1851 in Hull, Canada East as the E. B. Eddy Company. Ezra Butler Eddy had started off in business making matches in Hull by hand, from wood discarded by local sawmills. The company operated a match factory in Pembroke, Ontario until 1998. The company was merged with Atlas Match of Euless, Texas, but still operates as Eddy Match.
The box of Redbird matches doesn’t seem to be something currently offered by Eddy Match. This could be a vintage box made in the early-to-mid 20th Century.
Strangely, the scene cuts to a close-up of Carl speaking with Maggie at the Twin Peaks Sheriff’s Department. Outside the windows appears to be someplace completely different than the paved walking path seen just moments before.
The closest area I could find that MAY match is Divine Auto Centers and Moon Motorcycles on Bolach Avenue, just off Bendigo Boulevard. Since Google Street View doesn’t have current images from this street, I used Google Earth from 2015 again to find a possible match.
Carl asks Maggie to connect him to Deputy Briggs.
Cross-referenced an aerial image from Google Earth one more time to confirm this was the spot.
Shelly tells Bobby that their daughter took her car and that Becky has a gun. We catch a glimpse of a building near the entrance to Mt. Si Golf Course outside Shelly’s window.
As they continue along Boalch Avenue, the scene ends and cuts to the stairwell of an apartment complex.
Interestingly, if you continue along Boalch Avenue, you will end up a the famous intersection from Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me and Part 6 on Showtime. Bolach Avenue turns into SE Park Street and eventually Meadowbrook Way.
The brick building in the background is the apartment where Becky shoots the door.
The now demolished Mo’s Motor location would be on your right as you approach the intersection on Meadowbrook Way.
