David Lynch, Michael J. Anderson and Bob Engels at Cannes Film Festival Party on May 16, 1992

David Lynch’s Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me had its world premiere on May 16, 1992 at the Cannes Film Festival. Fellow long-time fan Dugpa and I have wrote extensively about the premiere and dispelled the long-standing rumor about the film being booed at the prestigious festival. There were two screenings held that day – one for press and one for attendees. Following the second screening, a party was held on a nearby beach. I  acquired a 5″ X 7″ photo from this party in an auction lot from the Estate of Debby Trutnik, David Lynch’s Former Assistant, sold by Julien’s Auctions in December 2025.

JULIEN’S AUCTIONS – LOT #19 IN DECEMBER 2025

Julien's Auctions - Lot 19, December 2025

In December 2025, personal photos and ephemera of David Lynch were offered at auction by Julien’s Auctions. These items originated from Estate of Debby Trutnik, David Lynch’s long-time assistant. I was delighted to find several photographs from the Cannes premiere of Lynch’s 1992 masterpiece, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me.

An evening screening of Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me was held in the Grand Auditorium at the Palais des Festivals et des Congres on May 16, 1992. After the premiere, Lynch and crew attend a star-studded private Twin Peaks party for VIPs.

The photo above features Lynch, Michael J. Anderson (Little Man From Another Place) and Robert “Bob” Engels at the afterparty. The longer I look at this photo, the more I find interesting details.

You’ll notice blue roses pinned to lapels, which were all worn by Lynch’s team. Anderson is wearing the same red suit and shirt seen in Lynch’s feature film.

Co-writer Bob Engels is wearing a black-and-white patterned vest under his tuxedo jacket. He’s talking to a woman who has her back turned to camera who I believe is editor Mary Sweeney.

Along the right side of the photo, there is another woman holding a camera to take a photo of Lynch and Anderson. How I’d love to find that image!

Later that evening VIP guests walked across the Croisette (seaside walkway) to Majestic Beach. They would see 20-foot high letters atop the roof of the Carlton Hotel that read  TWIN PEAKS. This was a special treat Ciby Pictures commissioned to commemorate the film’s premiere. Guests were treated to musical performances by Julee Cruise who sang “Questions in a World of Blue” and Anderson who sang “A Real Indication.”

I’m thrilled to have a high-resolution version of this image from 1992 to add to the ever-growing archive of all things Twin Peaks.
