One-Page Advertisement for David Lynch’s ‘Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me’

Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me advertisement

Decades after Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me blazed through theatres, I’m still discovering new things about my favorite David Lynch film. Recently, I purchased a one-page advertisement for the North American release of this masterpiece which debuted on August 28, 1992. It’s beautiful, simple and straightforward ad.

Produced by New Line Cinema, this one-page advertisement for Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me is a stunningly simple yet eye-catching design. It measures approximately 9.75-inch wide by 12-inches tall and appears to be clipped from a magazine. It’s unclear which magazine it was pulled from (but I’m guessing something like “Rolling Stone” or “Spin.”

I love David Lynch’s name uses the same font as the film’s logo. The ad states the film would be “Coming August 28th To A Theatre New Year.” The New Line Cinema logo with the year 1992 in Roman numerals – MCMXCII – is printed along the bottom.

The advertisement is unique compared to the North American movie poster which featured Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee) at the Red Diamond City Motel pictured in a burning half-heart necklace.

Following the negative reception by critics at the Cannes Film Festival in May 1992, New Line Cinema was forced to adopt unconventional means of advertising Lynch’s then newest film. They held Happy Hours at Manhattan Coolers in California and had a party for the film without actually showing the film in downtown Los Angeles.

It makes sense why New Line would lean in on only using Lynch’s name. With several award-winning films released by the early 1990s along with the groundbreaking television series Twin Peaks, audiences knew to expect something unique with a new David Lynch film. There wasn’t much else left to say which makes this particular advertisement so compelling.
