Though I’ve spent years studying Twin Peaks props and collecting replicas, the show’s wardrobe has largely remained in my blind spot. Thankfully A.M. Starr, author of the wonderfully insightful 1400 River Road blog, has a keen eye for wardrobe details and has identified several pieces I likely would’ve missed. In 2021, she identified and wrote about the brooch Jerry Horne wears in episode 1.005 while celebrating with the Icelanders at The Great Northern Hotel, and thus, I was able to add one to my collection.
WHAT IS JERRY HORNE’S BROOCH SEEN IN TWIN PEAKS EPISODE 1.005?
Jerry’s brooch features a group of faceless silhouettes. This piece was produced by Rhode Island-based Jonette Jewelry in 1988. The company was founded by Abraham Lisker in 1935 and was first known as The Providence Jewelry Company.
Abraham’s brother Nathan joined shortly thereafter and the brand went through its first name change, becoming Lisker & Lisker. Another change would follow in 1944 as the brothers attempted to bounce back after World War II slowed business. They combined their parents’ names, John and Etta, and became Jonette Jewelry Company. In 1970, their branding was shortened to JJ. The family-owned company remained in business until September 2006.
In 2017, author Laurie Zeiden posted a brief overview of the company’s history on the World of Eccentricity & Charm blog, which also shows several examples of JJ’s costume jewelry and variations of their hallmark that were stamped on their products over the years.
JONETTE JEWELRY LOOKALIKES
Searching with descriptive terms on sites like Etsy and eBay turns up results that look very similar to the brooch seen in Twin Peaks, which are not branded with JJ’s stamp on the back. These two examples above are labeled “TH-58 MEX925” (left) and “925 Mexico TS 111” (right).
Though it’s difficult to see the detail of this brooch onscreen even with Blu-ray clarity, a close comparison of the negative space and the tilt of the figures’ heads in Jerry’s brooch paired with my JJ replica appears to be a much closer match than any of the similar listings. I believe A.M. was on the money with her identification.
APPEARANCES OF JERRY HORNE’S JONETTE JEWELRY BROOCH IN TWIN PEAKS
In Twin Peaks, Jerry only wears the brooch once during the welcome party for the Icelanders at The Great Northern Hotel during episode 1.005. It’s first seen when he tells his Icelandic snow queen, Heba, that he wants to cook for her.
The best view of the brooch comes when Jerry takes the microphone to address the gathered Icelanders. His affinity for costume jewelry is apparent as he stacks the JJ brooch with a silver silhouette of cupid.
The final brief look at Jerry’s brooch is seen when Ben urgently asks him to remove a grieving Leland Palmer from the party.
