In honor of Father’s Day, here’s my love letter to the many ties Ben Horne wears in Twin Peaks, from the Pilot Episode through Part 17 of Season 3 on Showtime.
The first time we seen Ben Horne is in the Pilot Episode. He is talking with Leland Palmer in front of a fireplace. The tie he wears in that scene is worn for the rest of his appearances in the episode.
Ben returns in Episode 1001 sporting a red and blue polka dot tie. It’s one of several polka dotted ties that will be seen throughout the series (must have been a popular fashion trend in the early 1990s). He wears the tie while speaking with Catherine Martell at the Timber Falls Motel and later when scolding Audrey Horne.
The red and blue polka dot tie is seen again in Episode 1002 when Jerry Horne returns from Paris and interrupts dinner. He also wears the tie during their excursion to meet the new girl at One Eyed Jacks.
In Episode 1003, the red and blue polka dot ties is traded in for a black tie with white polka dots.
Ben sports a tie when having a secret meeting with Leo Johnson in the woods during Episode 1004.
Ben wears two different ties in Episode 1005. One tie is seen when speaking with his brother Jerry in his office. Another polka dotted tie – grey with red dots – is seen during the party for the Icelanders and when meeting Josie Packard. Polka dot tie count = 3
Episode 1006 increases the polka dot tie count to four with a black tie with gold dots.
Ben wears the same tie from Episode 1006 in Episodes 1007 and 2001 when visiting One Eyed Jacks.
The black tie with gold polka dots returns in Episode 2002. At this point, this polka dot tie is the one seen the most in Twin Peaks.
But a challenger returns in Episode 2003 – the black tie with white polka dots first seen in Episode 1003. Unfortunately, this is the final appearance of this tie in Twin Peaks. It will be replaced with a different colored polka dot tie in Episode 2004.
A navy tie with white polka dots is seen throughout Episode 2004. Ben wears it when speaking with Louie, later when talking with Jean Renault and finally giving a nod to Mr. Tojamura.
The polka dot ties take a break in Episode 2005 and are replaced with a patterned tie with complementary blue pocket square.
For Episode 2006, Ben is seen wearing the same tie from Episode 2005 meets he Special Agent Dale Cooper in an empty dining room at The Great Northern Hotel.
A second tie is seen in this episode with it’s first appears at The Bookhouse when Ben checks on Audrey Horne. It made its first appearance in Episode 1005.
This tie is worn for several other scenes including speaking with Josie Packard, Leland Palmer and Mr. Tojamura.
In Episode 2007, an angry Ben marches toward the Great Northern Hotel lobby sporting a new tie.
The same tie is seen later in the episode when Audrey Horney confronts Ben about One Eyed Jacks.
The grey tie with red polka dots makes a return in Episode 2007 when he is arrested by the Twin Peaks Sheriff’s Department. It was last seen in Episode 1005.
Ben is still wearing the grey tie with red polka dots in Episode 2008 while in jail and being interrogated.
Ben is also seen wearing the grey tie with red polka dots in Episode 2009.
For Episodes 2010 and 2011, Ben wears a tie with yellow school busses.
The bus-themed tie returns in Episode 2012 when Ben trades in his silk robe for a Confederate solider jacket.
The polka dots are back in Episode 2013! Strangely, Ben had time to change his tie as he falls more into his Civil War fantasy world.
This view of Ben in Episode 2014 shows the backside of his navy tie with white polka dots.
We get a better look at the tie later in Episode 2014, especially when he grabs the flag and sings with Dr. Jacoby.
While difficult to see at first, Ben is still wearing the navy polka dot tie in Episode 2015. This marks the final appearance of Ben’s polka dotted ties.
Ben trades in his normal ties for a bow tie and tuxedo in Episode 2017. It is the first of two appearances when he wears a tux.
Ben wears a bright red and green tie with stripped shirt when addressing the Miss Twin Peaks committee at the Roadhouse.
We get a better look at the tie in subsequent scenes in Episode 2019. Early 1990s fashion was something special.
Ben drapes a tie around his neck in several scenes in Episode 2020. It’s first scene when he speaks with John Justice Wheeler.
Ben continues with the draped tie look in Episode 2020 when he Audrey Horne returns to his office.
In Episode 2021, Ben wears a bright royal blue tie with pattern when discussing scared texts with Audrey Horne in his office. It’s his final appearance in a normal tie for Season 2.

For Ben’s last appearance in Part 17, he again wears the navy tie with white dots first seen in Part 7.
In total, Ben wears 21 different ties – 20 regular ties and one black bow tie.
