Did you know the Mitchum Brothers have a connection to Frank Sinatra? Their home seen in Twin Peaks Parts 10, 11 and 16 on Showtime was once the home to “ol’ blue eyes” through most of the 1950s. Here’s a closer look at this multi-million dollar estate known as “Farralone.”
WHERE IS THE MITCHUM BROTHERS HOME LOCATED?
The home is located at 9361 Farralone Ave in Chatsworth, California. Completed in 1951, the home was commissioned by Dora Hutchinson who was the heir to the Chase Manhattan Bank fortune. Architects Pereira & Luckman designed this 10-,000 square foot home that sits on 14-acres. You may recognize their other architectural design work such as the Los Angeles International Airport.
For most of the 1950s, Sinatra rented the four-bedroom home complete with a guest house. The house was listed on the market for $12 Million in late December 2011 (see this Forbes article for even more fascinating history of this place). Sinatra lived in this home for about eight years.
It was offered for sale again in March 2015 for $7.5 Million. According to Redfin, it currently has an estimated value of $4.2 Million (2018) $2.6 Million (2024). In 2023, it was back on the market for $8.9 Million, which is significantly down from the $21.5 Million ask in 2021.
Thanks to Cap Equity Locations, I was able to confirm the former Sinatra house was used at the film location. It has also been seen in numerous other shows including Mad Men and Californication.
According to the Behind the Curtain footage from Part 10, scenes at the Mitchum Brothers home were shot on January 21, 2016.
CANDY CHASING THE FLY IN PART 10
We first see the Mitchum Brothers at their “Las Vegas” home in Part 10.
Compare this photo from Cap Equity Locations with the first image from Part 10. You’ll notice the breakfast bar chairs are exactly the same!
Take a look a the wall behind Candy and the drapes from Part 10. You’ll notice they also match the image.
The Behind the Curtain footage from this episode shows Candy rehearsing the scene before she hits Rodney with the television remote control.
After she hits Rodney, his brother Bradley runs into the scene. I love this alternate view of this scene from Behind the Curtain as you can see the entire crew watching the rehearsal.
Lynch gives Robert Knepper some direction as the crew watches on.
It’s also cool to see expert makeup artist Richard Redlefsen watching David Lynch apply makeup to Robert Knepper.
In this footage, you can see the giant television which the Mitchum Brothers will watch later in the episode.
MITCHUM BROTHERS WATCHING TELEVISION IN PART 10
Later in Part 10, we return to the Mitchum Brothers’ home at night.
Compare the image above with the image below from Cap Equity Locations.
Clearly the Twin Peaks crew provided their own furnishings for the series.
The chairs in this corner of the living room were removed and a unique television stand and TV were added.
MITCHUM BROTHERS EATING BREAKFAST IN PART 11
The Mitchum Brothers’ house is also seen in Part 11 when they are “enjoying” breakfast.
The Behind the Curtain footage from Part 11 shows the breakfast scene was shot on the same day as Candy chasing the fly – January 21, 2016.
It was David Lynch who picked out the box of Kellogg’s Raisin Bran for Bradley Mitchum.
Another cool shot of Candy holding the coffee carafe before entering the scene. You can see the back of David Eubank, “A” Camera First Assistant, behind Amy Shiels. I also believe Gunnar Ted Walter is holding the boom.
In 2015, Eubank received the Society of Camera Operators Camera Technician Lifetime Achievement Award. He worked on Jurassic Park III, The Shining television mini-series, Oz, Great and Powerful and many other productions. Incredibly talented individual – Lynch and Frost hired the best!
Lynch likes works with a two camera set up as seen in this Behind the Curtain shot.
Here are two additional photos of the breakfast bar/kitchen area courtesy of Cap Equity Locations.
MITCHUM BROTHER HOME IN PART 16
We return to the house one more time in Part 16 when Special Agent Dale Cooper calls the Mitchum brothers.
Now, if I only won the lottery so I could buy this house! Where’s Mr. Jackpots?
