WHEN DID DAVID LYNCH BEGIN TRANSCENDENTAL MEDITATION?
During a CBS Sunday Morning interview with Mo Rocca on Jan. 3, 2016, David Lynch said his journey with Transcendental Meditation (TM) began on “July 1, 1973 on a sunny Saturday morning at 11:00.” [Note – in 1973, July 1 fell on a Sunday].
David then reminisced about that first day with Rocca.
“I remember it like it was yesterday. And it was so beautiful. I’ve been meditating twice a day for more than 41 years and never missed a meditation.”
Years early in an article published in The Leader Post on Mar. 10, 2007, Lynch explained how he felt after that first day to Michael Kress, an entertainment reporter at Beliefnet.
“It had an effect right away, and that right-away effect was this anger lifted away from me. I knew I had this anger, and I’d take it out on my first wife. Two weeks after I started meditation, she came to me and said, ‘What’s going on? … This anger – where did it go?’ And I honestly didn’t know that it had lifted.
That was in the beginning, and then it just keeps on growing. I think the ability to catch ideas grows, and the enjoyment of doing almost anything grows. An awareness, a clarity grows. A bigger picture starts to form – bigger and bigger.”
The earliest mention in a newspaper article about David Lynch practicing mediation comes from a Jan. 27, 1991 article in The Flint Journal. Charles Honey from the Journal News Service provides a profile on Transcendental Meditation and Maharishi International University (MIU) in Fairfield, Iowa.
“A TM-touted health system has set up clinics frequented by notables like Twin Peaks director David Lynch (Watch the TV show closely and you’ll see agent Dale Cooper drinking coffee from an MIU mug, meditators say.”
I’m unsure which mug Cooper supposedly uses as I don’t recall a mug with an MIU logo being a prop.
A few month later on July 28, 1991, Lynch was tied to a brief update about Transcendental Meditation’s comeback – “Everyone from movie director David Lynch to Elizabeth Taylor to ‘thirtysomething’s’ Nancy to real-life baby boomers are doing it.”
DAVID LYNCH EXPLAINS TRANSCENDENTAL MEDITATION
If you are not familiar with Transcendental Meditation (TM), this 16-minute documentary features David Lynch offering a detailed explanation. The video is mesmerizing as he sketches on a giant white board.
When I attended the Festival of Disruption held in Brooklyn, New York in May 2018, all attendees received a similar print that Lynch draws in the video.
I adore Lynch’s explanation at the beginning the video which was shot at his painting studio in Hollywood, California.
“This is a donut. It is very sweet and very good. But if you had never tasted a donut, you would never really know how sweet and how good a donut is, if you never had that experience. Transcendental Meditation is like that. Transcendental Meditation gives an experience much sweeter than the sweetness of this donut. It gives the experience of the sweetest nectar of life – pure bliss consciousness. As Maharishi [Mahesh Yogi] says, ‘Those who don’t know, they don’t know. Those who know, they enjoy it.’ I hope this following documentary gives you some good news about the sweetness of life.”
I am personally not familiar with TM and have never practiced it. I have found however that being present, lost in thought or focusing on the sounds of the world around me can help me meditate. So I invite you to join the world on Monday for 10 minutes. Just sit. Be with yourself. Send love and positivity into the world. I truly believe we need that now more than ever.
May everyone be happy. May everyone be free of disease. May auspiciousness be seen everywhere. May suffering belong to no one.
