Twin Peaks Meets Mambo with New Music From Garmambozia

Garmambozia Band playing

For more than three decades, I’ve loved with connecting with fellow Twin Peaks fans from around the world. It’s incredible seeing how David Lynch and Mark Frost’s “wonderful and strange” show has inspired artists, authors, and musicians to create and share their works. Bands like Wisteria Lodge or F*ck You Tammy have captured the mystique of fictional Pacific Northwestern town. Now, Garmambozia, a surf band based in Chambéry, France, breaks on to the scene with new music and videos that is on heavy rotation in my home. I caught up with band leader Luc Detraz to learn more about their tribute to old fashion western guitar music.

Garmambozia is a French-based surf band which takes its name from “Garmanbozia” (Pain and Sorrow) as heard in David Lynch’s 1992 feature film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me.

Members include Dave Cooper and John Cole on guitars, Karol Truman on Bass and Luc Rosenfield on drums. Rosenfield is the on stage name of band leader and song writer Luc Detraz who loves the character of Special Agent Albert Rosenfield played by the late Miguel Ferrer. Detraz said band members have been playing music for 25 years.

“All the members of the band are Twin Peaks fans since we started the music together in 1999 with a Surf Band named ‘L’orchidée d’hawaï,’ said Detraz. “We stopped playing together in 2011 but after Twin Peaks: The Return, I called the guys and said, ‘Okay, let’s do another surf music band with compositions I wrote but from the perspective of being Twin Peaks fans.”

Lynch and Frost’s third season really changed Detraz’s life.

Twin Peaks: The Return was a shock for me, it really changed my life,” explained the band leader. “For me, this last season is the perfection of David Lynch and Mark Frost’s work. The friendship, the humanity, the way to see time, space, and life continue to touch me a lot and influence me every day.”

With this new found inspiration, Detraz assembled the original band members in 2023 and released five new tracks on their Bandcamp page and videos on YouTube.

“All the music was dreamed and written instantly early in the morning and it was accompanied with Twin Peaks images,” continued Detraz.

The five new tracks are currently found on their Bandcamp page and include songs titled, “Electricity,” “Blue Rose,” “Spiritual Finger” “The Harm” and “The Ring.” You can buy their digital album at a “name your own price.”

They don’t have any live shows currently planned in France since they just restarted as a band. Detraz told me he’s all set and ready with a “Twin Peaks Lodge” they would use for scenery. They hope to play some live show in summer 2025.

The five videos are currently found on their YouTube channel. One of the coolest things is Detraz used several photos and images from Twin Peaks Blog. I’ve always seen this Blog as a way for fans who love the show as much as I do to connect. It was wild seeing many photographs I’ve captured in the Real Twin Peaks of Snoqualmie Valley, Washington flash on to the screen.

“My wife dances on the music video ‘THE HARM’ with the credited name of Irène Horne,” said Detraz. “Audrey Horne is my second favorite character in the show and she’s amazing in Twin Peaks: The Return. I like those characters playing like they’re not on earth.”

Here are the five videos from their YouTube page.

Congratulations to Luc and the entire band on the new tunes. Let’s rock!
