Showtime For Your Consideration Transcendent Advertisement

In anticipation of Emmy Award nominations in July 2018, Showtime ran a series of For Your Consideration (FYC) advertisements featuring media outlet reviews of Twin Peaks: The Return. I previously discussed the IndieWire advertisement with Special Agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan). This ad includes a one word summary from an article in The Washington Post – “Transcendent.”

On May 2, 2018, Showtime invited Television Academy National Active members and a guest to an encore screening of Part 18 of Twin Peaks at the Paramount Theatre in Hollywood, California. This event was presented and hosted by Showtime, not by the Television Academy.

The screening was followed by a panel discussion with David Lynch, Kyle MacLachlan and Laura Dern as moderated by Andy Greenwald. This was the first time the “Transcendent” quote advertisement appeared in public.

Four-panel Emmy Award advertisement

I picked up this Showtime For Your Consideration Transcendent Advertisement featuring Special Agent Dale Cooper, Diane Evans and Deputy Director Gordon Cole from long-time Twin Peaks collector Bruce Phillips.

It was one panel on a four-panel, folder-like advertisement for Showtime shows including Patrick Melrose, The Chi and Smilf The image measures approximately 8.5-inches by 11-inches.

A similar long-rectangular advertisement appeared in the June 21, 2018 issue of the Los Angeles Times. This ad included a website for Emmy Award voters to get more information about the series.

The Showtime For Your Consideration Transcendent Advertisement included a publicity image from Part 17 captured by on-set photographer Suzanne Tenner.

The image doesn’t exactly appear in Part 17, rather it’s taken from this moment when Special Agent Dale Cooper, Diane Evans and Deputy Director Gordon Cole are walking in the dark. Agent Cooper’s face is superimposed over the image.

“TRANSCENDENT” QUOTE

The “Transcendent” quote from The Washington Post most likely comes from Alyssa Rosenberg’s article published on June 22, 2017. Rosenberg writes about mass culture, parenting and gender for The Washington Post’s Opinions section.

“This is not a dichotomy that maps neatly onto contemporary politics, and if it were, “Twin Peaks: The Return” wouldn’t be the transcendent and strange thing that it is.”

This article was written after Part 6 which aired on June 11, 2017 and one day before Part 7 was shown on June 18.

Interestingly, this isn’t the first time that The Washington Post published an article describing Twin Peaks as “Transcendent.”  On April 8, 1990, writer Tom Shales’ article about the show was titled, “Troubling, Transcendent ‘Twin Peaks.'”

In an effort to archive everything related to my favorite television show, both articles are presented below.
