The Drugged-out mother shouting “One one… nine! One one nine!” is one of the more memorable scenes from Twin Peaks Season 3 that is burned in my memory. This film location appears in three episodes – Parts 3, 5, and 6 – and takes place across the street from Dougie Jones’ love nest in Rancho Rosa Estates. In reality, we return to a neighborhood in Palmdale, California to explore the scenes.
WHERE IS THE ONE ONE NINE (119) HOUSE FROM TWIN PEAKS LOCATED?
Located at 37889 Lopez Lane in Palmdale, California, this five-bedroom, three-bathroom home was constructed in 2007. The approximate coordinates are 34°34’13.2″N 118°00’30.9″W.
This housing community is one of many added during a building boom in Antelope Valley that peaked in 2005. Originally sold in 2008, the home has changed hands a few times. Most recently, it was sold in September 2016. Thankfully, the real estate listing from that time provided interior shots which you’ll see in this article.
According to the Behind the Curtain footage from the Twin Peaks – From Z to A collection, the scenes inside the One One Nine House were shot on January 14, 2016. It’s the same day that they shot scenes of hitman Jake tracking Jade’s Jeep.
The easiest way to explore this location is to break down each location both inside and out. We’ll start with the first look at the house in Part 3.
LITTLE BOY LOOKS OUT THE WINDOW
The first time we see the One One Nine house is in Part 3 when Jade backs up her Jeep from the driveway at Dougie Jones’ love shack.
Soon after, hitman Gene pulls up in front of the house to survey the scene.
Unbeknownst to Gene, a little boy (played by Sawyer Shipman) watches from a front window of his home.
The Little Boy sees Gene place an object under Jones’ vehicle still parked in the driveway.
Here’s the same front room where the little boy looks out the window.
We get a better look at how they shot this scene in the Behind the Curtain footage. Since the room was so small, part of the crew were set up in another spot inside the home.
It appears only one camera was used for these scenes (Lynch typically shoots with two setups). Most likely the room was too small and there wasn’t a need for a second camera.
David Lynch, script supervisor Cori Glazer and first assistant director Scott Cameron watch the action from the dining room.
I couldn’t believe the real estate photo basically had the same set up, including the throw pillow on the chair in the distance.
We get another look at where Lynch’s seat was perched later in the Behind the Curtain footage.
Thanks to a virtual tour still on YouTube, we get additional looks still inside the home.
After Gene departs, the little boy returns to eating Saltine crackers from what appears to be a generic box. The broken lamp to the left of the scene adds a depressing touch.
The boy will return to the window in Part 5 to view Dougie’s car.
He runs back inside the house after the car explodes and again watches the action from that front window. Most likely, the already crew had the second camera set up in this house when they destroyed the vehicle. It was quickly extinguished so the wouldn’t have had time to do another take.
DRUGGED-OUT MOTHER AT ONE ONE NINE HOUSE
We are first introduced to the Drugged-out mother (played by Hailey Gates of Viceland’s States of Undress fame) in Part 3. She shouts “One one… nine! One one nine!” while sitting at a square folding table. A bottle of Evan Willams is placed in front of her.
The same set up and footage is used in Part 6 when the mother hears the police on the roof.
In a 2017 Salon interview, Mark Frost sort of explained why the mother yells in this scene:
Ryan Reed: I’m a member of this “Twin Peaks: The Return” Facebook group. I don’t know if you’re aware of it, but there are thousands of members, and the “119” woman seems to fascinate people.
Frost: “I’m not aware of it. I actually cancelled my Facebook account after the events of the last year, but give them my best regards. [laughs] I’ll give you one possible thing to think about [with the “119” woman]: The people who have one foot in the other world have a pronounced tendency to speak backwards.”
It was neat to see Lynch gave specific direction for Hailey’s makeup as he clearly had a vision for how he wanted her to appear on screen.
They are standing in the front doorway to the home as he provides direction. Notice the flooring from this real estate photo.
When we see a wide-angle shot of the Drugged-out mother who has subsequently passed out, the flooring is now carpet.
The crew put down green carpet over the bamboo and tile flooring and, something that blew my mind, they constructed a temporary wall inside the house! It looks like stand-in Ashley Siloac is seated where Hailey will be seated.
Ashley played the uncredited role of “Agnes” a receptionist at Lucky 7 Insurance.
Here’s another look at the area where the crew built a temporary wall. The dining room from earlier in this article is far back right. The wall would have blocked off the far end of the giant couch.
Driven by curiosity, the little boy leaves the home to examine what Gene placed under Dougie’s car. He looks down the hall to see his mom passed out at the table.
Interestingly, the Drugged-out mother was named Elizabeth according to the Combined dialog and Continuity Lists submitted for the Television Academy. Since an official script hasn’t been made available, this document is the closest thing we get to one.
The bottle of Evan Willams was replaced with Moraga Cay rum.
The Drugged-out mother wakes up after the car explosion.
Here’s a different view of about the same spot. The wall was installed next to that painting on the wall.
When Lynch speaks with Sawyer Shipman, we can see the edges of the carpet and wall that the crew added. On-set photographer Suzanne Tenner stands with her large-format camera. I believe David Eubank, A Camera First Assistant, is standing center next to the monitor.
ONE ONE NINE HOUSE EXTERIOR
For this last section, we step outside the home where some of the action takes place in Parts 5 and 6.
I drove by the house on September 20, 2020. I almost didn’t recognize it as the exterior was repainted and the yard has a singular tree in a sea of grass.
The Little boy leaves the house to explore Dougie’s car. It was freezing on the day this scene was shot so the crew had to wait until mid-day before doing anything.
I’m curious if the “1” on his t-shirt was added. I haven’t found a matching outfit … yet.
The police examine the remains of Dougie’s car in Part 6.
A Patrol Officer climbs onto the roof to retrieve part of the car.
He’s played by actor Jay Jee.
The scene ends with an officer writing down the license plate information. This is also the final time we’ll visit the One One Nine House in Season 3.
