I recently discussed the film location for the exterior of the Rancho Rosa Estates house where Dougie Jones and Jade share an intimate and transformative afternoon together. This time, we are stepping inside the Las Vegas home that’s actually located in Palmdale, California.
HOUSE LOCATION
The home used as this film location is found at 37890 Lopez Lane in Palmdale, California. The approximate coordinates are 34°34’13.3″N 118°00’30.6″W.
This 2,664 square-foot, two-story home with four bedrooms and three bathrooms was constructed in 2007.
All of the scenes inside the house take place on the first floor, and this particular location is only found in Part 3 on Showtime.
JANUARY 13, 2016
The interior scenes were shot on January 13, 2016 according to the incredible Behind the Curtain features on the Twin Peaks – From Z to A Collection. Here, director David Lynch greets Director of Photography Peter Deming on set.
THE BEDROOM
Lynch walks into the bedroom which is found just to the left in the hallway that Peter Deming is standing beside. Nafessa Williams joins him bundled up in a heavy coat. It was a chilly day in the California desert and most likely they house didn’t have heat. Notice the dresser is against the back wall. It will be moved to the wall with the window for the scene.
The bedroom scene begins with Jade sitting next to Dougie Jones (note – out of respect, I’ve covered Nafessa’s naked body).
Kyle MacLachlan and Nafessa rehearse the scene under Lynch’s watchful eye in the Behind the Curtain footage.
Thanks to an old property listing, we can get a look inside the home. This is the first floor bedroom where this scene was shot.
David Lynch stood beside the closet door to watch the rehearsal.
After Jade leaves to take a shower, Dougie struggles with his tingling arm.
Struggling through the pain, Dougie puts on his signature mustard-color jacket and stands in the bedroom before being overcome by an other worldly force.
The specific bedroom used is see on the far left side of this back-of-the-house image. Blinds were added to hide the outside world.
THE HALLWAY
Jade is seen walking down this hall on her way to the shower.
In pain, Dougie crawls down the same hall.
We learn it’s the hallway from the bedroom when we see Lynch directing the scene from the living room.
Dougie attempts to open the bathroom door before continuing his slow crawl to the living room.
Lynch watching the two monitors. Typically he shoots scenes using two camera set ups. It appears this scene was captured using only one.
THE SHOWER
There are two different shots of Jade taking a shower, the latter is where she reacts to a strange noise coming from the bedroom.
Here’s the same bathroom complete without a shower curtain.
LIVING ROOM
We’re introduced to Dougie’s final destination with an establishing shot of a four-plug outlet found in the living room.
The living room is the same place where Lynch passed Peter Deming in the Behind the Curtain shot earlier in this article. The red drapes were superimposed over the living room scene (most likely captured way later on set at Calvert Studios in Van Nuys, California.
I love seeing this real estate image of the same living room as the four-plug outlet is found in the same spot as the series.
REHEARSING DOUGIE’S SCENE
The behind-the-scenes footage is such a treat. We see Lynch rehearsing a scene with Kyle. They practice how Dougie will jerk back toward the camera.
This is the same kitchen that Lynch, Deming, Script Supervisor Cori Glazer and First Assistant Director Scott Cameron are positioned.
David Lynch surveys the action while Executive Producer Sabrina Sutherland stands by in this Behind the Curtain shot. I included the matching real estate image from inside the home.
Once in the living room, Dougie vomits on the carpet floor.
You can see the similar action on Lynch’s monitor in the Behind the Curtain scene.
This is the same living room where the scene was shot. There were vertical blinds added to cover the backyard and the boarded up window where I’m guessing either a small air conditioning unit was placed or perhaps it was broken.
MAKING THE VOMIT
Assistant Prop Master Drew Pinniger is seen making the cream corn-inspired vomit for Dougie Jones. On-Set Dresser Mike Malone is seen in the background (he appears in both Twin Peaks – Fire Walk With Me and later in Part 13).
He uses Delmonte’s cans of Cream Style Sweet Corn and Crystal Geyser Alpine Natural Spring Water to make a paste.
Lynch later calls it “beautiful” after reviewing Drew’s work.
Ever since seeing the Little Man from Another Place eating creamed corn in Twin Peaks – Fire Walk With Me, I can’t eat that stuff.
The vomit is strategically placed in the living.
David Lynch even puts a placeholder in the spot where it would go while Kyle MacLachlan lays on the floor in his Dougie Jones attire. I wonder if this was supposed to be part of the scene.
It’s interesting to see this shot as it doesn’t appear in the episode.
Granted, Kyle just could have been laying in the spot similar to this shot during rehearsal.
WELL-DRESSED DOUGIE APPEARS
I love that the cable outlet was crooked, just like it is in the actual home.
Well-dressed Dougie appears from the electric socket, complete with a hole in his right foot sock.
During part of the rehearsal, Assistant Director Scott Cameron lays in the spot where Dougie Jones is found. We also get a really cool look at Mark Skip Buccola who was a stand-in for Season 3.
Buccola also served as a stand-in during the first two seasons of Twin Peaks. It’s a rare thing to see him in action which is why those Behind The Curtain features are such a wonderful thing.
JADE FINDS DOUGIE
Jade finds well-dressed Dougie laying on the living room floor. She enters the scene from the front of the house. Yet we know the bathroom she used was located just down the hall from the bedroom .
Nafessa rehearses the scene as Lynch and Deming look on.
You’ll notice the crew covered the fireplace with a mattress to ensure it wasn’t damaged during the shoot.
STAIRWELL
We get one last glimpse inside the home when Dougie and Jade are standing outside the house. The main stairwell with white railing is seen just through the open door.
THE VOMIT IS A WRAP!
One of my favorite parts of the Behind the Curtain video from this episode is when David Lynch calls out that the “vomit is a wrap!” Assistant Property Masters Drew Pinniger (left bottom) and Josh Richter (bottom right) are seen cleaning up the vomit they created.
And like the vomit, this article is a wrap.
