Every small town needs a classic diner like the Double R Diner in Twin Peaks. Located on Highway J (according to the “Twin Peaks Access Guide to the Town”), service is attentive and courteous at the Double R, and, with every meal comes delicious FBI approved coffee from the old, always reliable, J.H. McKie coffee maker. The iconic “RR” sign is the topic of today’s 30th Anniversary artwork from the Twin Peaks and Society6 collaboration.
The Twin Peaks X Society6 collection is no longer available as of 2024. This article is an archive of the artwork featured in this collection released in 2020 for the 30th anniversary of David Lynch and Mark Frost’s wonderful and strange series.
JUNE 27, 2020 – stefaniewolfson
Every day in June 2020, Showtime and Society6 are releasing new Twin Peaks-inspired artwork by artists from around the world. A new design is released each day.
New York-based artist stefaniewolfson created a simple graphic featuring the iconic red “RR” logo from the Double R Diner in Twin Peaks.
Unlike many other pieces in this 30th Anniversary collection, Stefanie’s piece is only available on a white coffee mug. Either 11oz sized.
Or the slightly larger 15oz sized mug, for when you really need a good wake me up.
RR SIGN IN TWIN PEAKS
Seeing this logo got me thinking about the number of times we see the small “RR” neon sign on the Double R Diner’s “Mar-T Cafe” sign.
The first appearance is just before Heidi the waitress pulls into the parking lot of the Double R Diner in the Pilot Episode. This scene was shot on the first day of location shooting on February 21, 1989.
These two shots from the Atmospheric scenes on the The Entire Mystery Blu-ray set were most likely captured at the same time.
The first nighttime shot is found in Episode 1001. As you can tell from the image directly above, it was probably shot at the time time as the daytime image.
These two shots from Episodes 1003 and 2014 are pretty similar, only a slight crop in the bottom image. I’m guessing they were also shot on the first day of production in 1989.
We don’t see the diner’s exterior in the theatrical release for Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me. Thanks to The Missing Pieces, we catch a look at the diner’s sign with Mount Si in the background.
Two looks at the “RR” Sign from Season 3 on Showtime. The top image is from Part 5 while the bottom is from Part 6.
The first nighttime shot in Season 3 is found in Part 11. Look at that neon glow!
One of my favorite shots of the sign is found in Part 13.
Two more great shots of the Double R Diner (Twede’s Cafe) and Mount Si are found in Part 15.
The final shot is found in Part 18 when Richard/Cooper passes the diner at night with Carrie Page.
THE ARTIST – STEFANIE WOLFSON
Printmaker stefaniewolfson lives in New York says much of her work deals with abstracted landscape, spirituality, and the effect on both ideas on the viewer. She offers several of her landscape and flora prints on her Society6 shop. She also has an official Facebook page and an Instagram account where you can follow her designs.
The “RR” logo isn’t her first Twin Peaks design. She currently has this Dale Cooper-inspired print available on her Etsy shop.
