Twin Peaks X Society6 – The Owls Are Not What They Seem

One of the most memorable lines of dialogue from the Season 2 opener is spoken by the Giant who visits a wounded Special Agent Dale Cooper. While providing Cooper with three clues, he remarks, “The owls are not what they seem.” This line is also the subject of today’s 30th Anniversary artwork by artist Sarah Young on Society6. Did you know the Giant’s on screen dialogue was different than what was scripted?

TheĀ Twin Peaks X Society6 collection is no longer available as of 2024. This article is an archive of the artwork featured in this collection released in 2020 for the 30th anniversary of David Lynch and Mark Frost’s wonderful and strange series.

For today’s release, Sarah combined the Owl Cave symbol with the iconic black and white chevron floor. The design is punctuated by the Giant’s famous words.

THE ORIGINAL CLUES FROM THE GIANT

The Giant and Cooper
Episode 2.001

When the Giant suddenly appears in Room 315 at the Great Northern Hotel, he tells Cooper three things that will come true. While we know the second clue as “The owls are not what they seem,” the original teleplay contained something slightly different.

Episode 2001 was the first episode of the much-anticipated Season 2. The story was by Mark Frost and David Lynch. Mark penned the teleplay, while Lynch directed the episode.

There were four revisions made to the script throughout July 1990, and revised pages were printed in different colors.

July 7, 1990 – BLUE
July 9, 1990 – PINK
July 10, 1990 – GREEN
July 24, 1990 – YELLOW

Each clue is worded slightly different than the broadcasted version:

CLUE #1
Broadcast: “There is a man in a smiling bag.”
Script: “The man in the smiling bag.”

CLUE #2
Broadcast: “The owls are not what they seem.”
Script: “The owls are not what you think.”

CLUE #3
Broadcast: “Without chemicals, he points.”
Script: “He points without the proper chemical.”

Can you imagine an alternate reality where we all said, “The owls are not what you think?”

I guess there is a reality where that is happening now, and they are also on Season 10 of Lynch and Frost’s wonderful and strange show. If only….

THE PRODUCTS

Sarah’s artwork is was featured on numerous products available now on Society6’s website.

I really like the tote bag and throw pillow as the square graphic works really well on both items.

Both the Duvet Cover and Comforter would be perfect for a Twin Peaks-themed bedroom.

Nice to see another Carry-All Pouch similar to one released for yesterday’s Audrey Horne-inspired design by Pudding Baby.

SARAH YOUNG – THE ARTIST

Sadly, I couldn’t locate any information about Sarah Young other than her profile photo on Society6. She has additional artwork available on her page.
