June 10 is an important day in the Twin Peaks community. On this date in 1991, the ABC Television Network aired the final two episodes of Season 2 as a primetime movie event. It’s fitting then that the artwork selected today for Twin Peaks‘ 30th Anniversary collection on Society6 gives a nod to a memorable scene from the finale.
Every day in the month of June, Society6 and Showtime are releasing one piece of artwork celebrating the milestone anniversary of Mark Frost and David Lynch’s masterpiece.
JUNE 10 – SHILAT
Tel-Aviv artist Shilat titled her work “Meanwhile,” which were inspired by the way Laura Palmer positions her hands in Episode 2022.
Shilat posted a similar neon-colored “Meanwhile” design on her Instagram account in November 2018. She remarked that the scene “gives her chills” and she wanted to honor it by giving it some “neon glamour.”
On June 20, Society6 release this artwork as part of their 30th Anniversary collection.
A SHOCKING ENDING
Fans of Twin Peaks waited nearly two months to see the final two episodes of Season 3. Episode 2020 aired on April 18, 1991 and left viewers wondering if Bob had escaped the Black Lodge. The two-part finale was billed as “shocking” and it certainly lived up to its name.
I recall watching the finale on Christmas Eve in 1993 when the series aired on Bravo Television. While I was left with more questions than answers, I was completely hypnotized by the Red Room scenes. That place had fascinated me since I first saw the ending of the International Pilot a few months earlier.
MEANWHILE…
In Episode 2022, Laura Palmer (or someone who feels like she knows her) tells Special Agent Cooper that she will see him again in 25 years. She then says one word, “Meanwhile.”
She goes silent and presents her hands as such.
Meanwhile [pun intended] later in the episode, we see Laura Palmer’s doppelgänger present her hands first.
Then she angrily yells “Meanwhile” before climbing over a chair and approaching Cooper.
We *literally* then waited 25 years to see Cooper, Laura and the rest of the gang in Season 3 on Showtime.
At the beginning of Part 1, we are reminded of the last time we saw the good Dale and Laura in the Lodge. The scene plays out exactly like Episode 2022 except the image is cropped to a 16:9 format and the color has been enhanced.
THE PRODUCTS
Shilat’s artwork is featured on numerous Society6 items, from stickers and home decor to apparel and prints.
It’s great to see these items available as so many unique products. The shower curtain is pretty cool and would be perfect for a Twin Peaks-themed bathroom. I also like the beach towel, now that summer is just around the corner.
THE ARTIST
According to her bio on Society6, Shilat is a Visual Communications design student from Tel Aviv who watches too much TV (don’t we all?). You can follow her work on Instagram (@shilat.andstuff). She also has other products, such as the “Witch Please” posters, available on her Society6 store.
30-DAY COUNTDOWN
Ten designs reveled and 20 more to go! It’s neat seeing this chart fill up with each passing day. It also helps me keep track of what day it is … cause I really don’t know anymore. Check back tomorrow for a new design.
