The Red Room in Twin Peaks has fascinated since I first watched the series in October 1993. Before viewing Episode 1002 (as well as the international version of the Pilot Episode), I had never seen anything like it before on television. For this love letter, I’ve selected nine favorite images from the three-part Vacant Peaks series.
LOVE LETTER TO A VACANT RED ROOM IN TWIN PEAKS
The recurring Vacant Peaks series was inspired by an article from InTwinPeaks.com website which had a handful of images from the series without people. I expanded on that article by focusing on a variety of different locations, such as Fat Trout Trailer Park or Dr. Jacoby’s Office. I love these fleeting moments that only show buildings, props or details without people.
Here are quick links to all three Red Room articles: Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3.
Now … [hand clap] Let’s rock!
Episode 2.022: This is the moment just before the Little Man from Another Place appears while singer Jimmy Scott sings “Sycamore Trees.”
Episode 2.022: This is the moment just before Special Agent Dale Cooper enters the “waiting room.” The camera slowly moves to the right as he passes through the red drapes. I still need that Saturn Lamp!
Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me: I love the reflection of THE ring from my favorite David Lynch film. I’m even happier that Rocklove Jewelry made a replica of the ring that’s available on the Paramount Shop.
Part 2: This surreal moment from Part 2 on Showtime used superimposed images of the Red Room to create the illusion it was moving.
Part 2: Three Venus statues were used throughout the series and film. In Part 2, I loved the close up shot of the third statue, Venus of Arles. The slow zoom in toward the statue’s face is hauntingly beautiful.
Part 18: The empty chair where Laura Palmer should have appeared in Part 18 on Showtime.
Part 2: I remember cheering when the red drapes opened in Part 2 to reveal a white horse. This animal was also seen in Episode 2.007 of Season 2 and Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me.
Episode 2.022: Coffee. Coffee. Coffee. This image also appears in the end credits for this episode in which an upside down Laura Palmer makes an appearance.
Part 18: The hallway! There are several hallway shots seen in the series, and I love them all. I can only imagine what it was like for Dale Cooper to walk from room to room, never knowing what would be found behind those drapes.
