In Twin Peaks Part 16, Dougie Jones lands in Memorial Hospital in Las Vegas after sticking a metal fork into an electric socket in Part 15. In reality, this scene, along with a brief scene in Part 17, were shot inside Valley Presbyterian Hospital in Van Nuys, California. Thanks to some location images from the internet, I found the exact spots inside the hospital where the action took place.
Located at 15107 Vanowen Street in Van Nuys, Valley Presbyterian Hospital opened in 1958 as a small, neighborhood provider of personalized medical care. Today, they are a 350-bed hospital in the San Fernando Valley that serves thousands of families each year.
Thanks to the San Fernando Valley Blog, I found this postcard image of the original buildings from the early 1960s. Architect William Pereira designed the spectacular mid-century buildings. You may recognize some of his other works including the iconic LAX Theme Building or the Transamerica Pyramid in San Francisco.
A close up shot of Dougie’s medical bracelet reveals he is in a coma at Memorial Hospital in Las Vegas (that’s not a real hospital in the actual city).
Inside the Valley Presbyterian Hospital, there is a Nursing Skills Simulation Laboratory where “nursing students and health care teams master their skills on mannequins that are designed to simulate realistic patient situations and responses with limitless medical scenarios.” The image above appears to be the location of Dougie/Cooper’s bed.
Kyle MacLachlan did a fantastic job staying completely motionless during this scene.
Here’s another look at the room where Dougie/Cooper was in a coma.
After Bushnell Mullins is called away from Dougie Jones’ room by a mysterious sound, Dale Cooper suddenly wakes up from his deep sleep.
Here’s a similar angle of Cooper’s bed from Part 16.
Stepping to the other side of the bed before Cooper wakes up, we can see a sliding glass door and plaid curtains across the hallway.
This image from Valley Presbyterian Hospital appears to match the location used in the episode.
Bushnell watches a sleeping Dougie Jones/Dale Cooper. I love that he is holding drink ware from the Silver Mustang Casino. They appear to be the same cups that the (minus lids and red straws).
Here’s a look at the area where Bushnell was leaning against.
The hand sanitizer, glove box holder, framed wall sign and plaid curtains all appear to match the location.
The room is seen again in Part 17 when FBI Agent Headley calls Gordon Cole to report they have found but not found Cooper. Bushnell Mullins also speaks with Cole regarding a note Cooper left that mentions it’s 2:53 in Las Vegas (the number of completion) and that he is headed to Sheriff Truman’s.
This is another view of the room at Valley Presbyterian Hospital where these scenes were shot.
When Cooper wakes up he sees Mike, The One-Armed Man in a chair positioned next to his bed. Â I was unable to find a matching chair which means it could be a prop from the crew.
Notice the placement of the overhead lights and ceiling tiles which appear to match what is behind Cooper.
The crew used one additional interior location during Part 16. Janey-E and Sonny-Jim leave Cooper’s room to get the car. The scene opens with an uncredited actress walking down a hallway (who is she?!).
Notice the gray directional sign on the wall just past the row of chairs. It appears to match what is seen in Part 16.
Janey-E and Sonny-Jim continue down the hallway.
This is a look at that hall from the opposite end of where they are walking. You catch a glimpse of those green chairs as they walk toward the camera.
They also pass several doors along the left side of the hallway as they make their way to the car.
Cooper eventually meets up outside and together they drive to Silver Mustang Casino about 20 minutes away. You can read about .
