In honor of Father’s Day, here’s my love letter to the many ties Ben Horne wears in Twin Peaks, from the Pilot episode through Part 17 of Season 3 on Showtime.
LOVE LETTER TO BEN HORNE’S TIES IN TWIN PEAKS
PILOT EPISODE
The first time we seen Ben Horne is in the Pilot episode. He is talking with Leland Palmer in front of a fireplace.
The tie he wears in that scene is worn for the rest of his appearances in the episode.
EPISODE 1.001
Ben returns in Episode 1.001 sporting a red and blue polka dot tie.
It’s one of several polka dotted ties that will be seen throughout the series (must have been a popular fashion trend in the early 1990s). He wears the tie while speaking with Catherine Martell at the Timber Falls Motel and later when scolding Audrey Horne.
EPISODE 1.002
The red and blue polka dot tie is seen again in Episode 1.002 when Jerry Horne returns from Paris and interrupts dinner. He also wears the tie during their excursion to meet the new girl at One Eyed Jacks.
EPISODE 1.003
In Episode 1.003, the red and blue polka dot ties is traded in for a black tie with white polka dots.
Ben wears the same tie to Laura Palmer’s funeral.
EPISODE 1.004
Ben sports a tie when having a secret meeting with Leo Johnson in the woods during Episode 1.004.
EPISODE 1.005
Ben wears two different ties in episode 1.005. One tie is seen when speaking with his brother Jerry in his office.
Another polka dotted tie – grey with red dots – is seen during the party for the Icelanders and when meeting Josie Packard.
Polka dot tie count = 3
EPISODE 1.006
Episode 1.006 increases the polka dot tie count to four with a black tie with gold dots.
EPISODES 1.007 AND 2.001
Ben wears the same polka dot tie from episode 1.006 in episodes 1.007 and 2.001 when visiting One Eyed Jacks.
EPISODE 2.002
The black tie with gold polka dots returns in Episode 2.002. At this point, this polka dot tie is the one seen the most in Twin Peaks.
EPISODE 2.003
But a challenger returns in Episode 2.003 – the black tie with white polka dots first seen in Episode 1.003. Unfortunately, this is the final appearance of this tie in Twin Peaks. It will be replaced with a different colored polka dot tie in Episode 2.004.
EPISODE 2.004
A navy tie with white polka dots is seen throughout Episode 2.004. Ben wears it when speaking with Louie, talking with Jean Renault and later giving a nod to Mr. Tojamura in the hotel lobby.
EPISODE 2.005
The polka dot ties take a break in Episode 2.005 and are replaced with a patterned tie with complementary blue pocket square.
EPISODE 2.006
For Episode 2.006, Ben is seen wearing the same tie from Episode 2.005 meets he Special Agent Dale Cooper in an empty dining room at The Great Northern Hotel.
A second tie is seen in this episode at The Bookhouse as Ben checks on his daughter Audrey. It first appeared in Episode 1.005 as Ben was sitting at his desk.
This tie is worn for several other scenes including speaking with Josie Packard, Leland Palmer and Mr. Tojamura.
EPISODE 2.007
In episode 2.007, an angry Ben marches toward the Great Northern Hotel lobby sporting a new tie.
The same tie is seen later in the episode when Audrey Horney confronts Ben about One Eyed Jacks.
The grey tie with red polka dots makes a return in episode 2.007 when he is arrested by the Twin Peaks Sheriff’s Department. It was last seen in episode 1.005.
Ben is still wearing the grey tie with red polka dots in episode 2.008 while in jail and being interrogated.
Ben is also seen wearing the grey tie with red polka dots in episode 2.009.
EPISODES 2.010 AND 2.011
For episodes 2.010 and 2.011, Ben wears a tie with yellow school busses.
EPISODE 2.012
The bus-themed tie returns in episode 2.012 when Ben trades in his silk robe for a Confederate solider jacket.
The polka dots are back in episode 2.013! Strangely, Ben had time to change his tie as he falls more into his Civil War fantasy world.
This view of Ben in episode 2.014 shows the backside of his navy tie with white polka dots.
We get a better look at the tie later in episode 2.014, especially when he grabs the flag and sings with Dr. Jacoby.
While difficult to see at first, Ben is still wearing the navy polka dot tie in episode 2.015. This marks the final appearance of Ben’s polka dotted ties.
Ben trades in his normal ties for a bow tie and tuxedo in episode 2.017. It is the first of two appearances when he wears a tux.
Ben wears a bright red and green tie with stripped shirt when addressing the Miss Twin Peaks committee at the Roadhouse.
We get a better look at the tie in subsequent scenes in episode 2.019. Early 1990s fashion was something special.
Ben drapes a tie around his neck in several scenes in episode 2.020. It’s first scene when he speaks with John Justice Wheeler.
Ben continues with the draped tie look in episode 2.020 when he Audrey Horne returns to his office.
In episode 2.021, Ben wears a bright royal blue tie with pattern when discussing scared texts with Audrey Horne in his office. It’s his final appearance in a normal tie for Season 2.
Ben dresses up in a tuxedo and black bow tie later in episode 2.021 and again in episode 2.022.
SEASON 3 – PART 1
Ben Horne was absent from Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me. But he returned to the Great Northern Hotel in Twin Peaks: The Return on Showtime. Early in Part 1, he is seen wearing his traditional suit with red tie sitting behind a desk in his office.
We get a better look at the tie courtesy of an official press photo from Showtime from Part 1.
Ben wears two different ties in Part 7 on Showtime. The first is seen when he is speaking on the telephone in his office.
Later in Part 7, he is wearing a navy tie when speaking with Beverly in his office.
The official Part 7 photo of Ben Horne from Showtime gives a better look at the navy tie with tiny white dots.
In Twin Peaks Part 10 on Showtime, Ben wears a navy tie with stripes while speaking on the telephone.
Interestingly, the official press photo from Part 10 of Ben Horne shows him wearing the tie first seen in Part 7.
Ben wears the same red tie from Part 1 in Part 12 when speaking with Sheriff Frank Truman at his office.

For Ben’s last appearance in Part 17, he again wears the navy tie with white dots first seen in Part 7.
In total, Ben wears 21 different ties – 20 regular ties and one black bow tie.
