The Green Mugs of Twin Peaks Sheriff’s Department

“Diane, today we are going to focus on the green coffee mugs.”

While researching all things about the Twin Peaks Sheriff’s Department in Twin Peaks, I kept noticing a green mug in several episodes throughout Season 2. The mug makes it’s first appearance in Episode 2001. But this mug is the second green colored mug to appear in Twin Peaks. The first one shows up early in the Pilot Episode.

Sheriff Truman is first seen holding an avocado green mug  just before taking a call from Pete Martell in the Pilot Episode. This is the only appearance of the mug until Twin Peaks Season 3 on Showtime. More on that in a moment.

A different green mug makes its first appearance in Episode 2001. It’s pictured next to Deputy Andy so I’m assuming he was using shortly before yelling at Agent Albert Rosenfield and storming out of the conference room. This mug, however, is different than the avocado colored one from the Pilot.

The mug is next seen in Episode 2004 while Lucy Moran is in the kitchen. The best part of this scene is Lucy’s handwritten note on the wall.

A close up shot of the mug can be seen later in Episode 2004. Thanks to a faux lightning effect, we can get a good look at this second green mug.

Judge Sternwood is the next person to use the green mug. Interestingly, the mug magically appears in his hand after being introduced to Special Agent Dale Cooper. In the prior scene with Sheriff Truman and Lucy, he doesn’t have the mug. One assumes there may be an outtake of Lucy presenting the Judge with the coffee mug.

A great look at the mug is seen when Judge Sternwood speaks with Leland Palmer in the conference room.

The mug is scene hanging on a pair of antlers in the kitchen in Episodes 2008 and 2010. On a side note, who played the baby Lucy is holding? He must be about 28 years old this year.

The mug shows up when Dale Cooper reviews properties with realtor Irene Littlehorse.

When Dale Cooper speaks with Colonel Riley and Sheriff Harry Truman in Episode 2012, there are multiple takes which show Cooper holding the mug and mug sitting on the desk.

The final appearance of the mug in Season 2 is seen when Lucy passed by the kitchen just before discovering Lana entertaining the boys. It’s barely seen placed next to a tan mug on the far right side of the image.

The mug used in Seasons 2 appears to be a vintage Anchor Hocking Fire King Jadite mug that has a “D” shaped handle.

Flash forward to 25 years later, the avocado colored mug first seen in the Pilot Episode makes an appearance in Twin Peaks Part 7 on Showtime. I first noticed the mug looked similar to the one Harry used in the Pilot on July 11, 2017.

A closer look at the mug is scene in Part 7 after Sheriff Frank Truman hangs up the telephone.

This mug is also an Anchor Hocking Fire King mug which I identified on July 20, 2017.

I used this mug this morning while researching and writing this story. While it’s not a screen used prop, the coffee was still damn fine. I found two mugs on eBay last summer.

The final appearance of the mug is found in Twin Peaks Part 17 on Showtime.

  1. Awesome post. I love stuff like this. I was just on the hunt for a great gift for a friend and was disappointed I couldn’t find exact replicas of the Twin Peaks Sheriff’s Department mugs. But, my searching led me here. I was then able to find a look-a-like to Sheriff Truman’s green mug on Etsy! I didn’t want anything cheesy and overstated. This is absolutely perfect!

Now I need to go back and read your blog!

  2. Hey this is really cool. I just as able to get both of the mugs shown here at a local antique shop for great prices!
